Description

Yeringberg only makes a varietal Cabernet in standout years, and 2022 delivered fruit too good to ignore. This is classic Yarra Valley Cabernet - structured, refined, and built to last - showing the kind of quiet confidence that comes from more than 150 years of winemaking history.

Sourced from 1999 plantings, the fruit was hand-picked, carefully sorted, destemmed, and fermented in small open-top tanks with 16 days on skins. Aged for 21 months in French oak (30% new), this wine is all about purity and poise.

There’s a depth to the aromatics: blackberry, black olive, and tobacco, wrapped around hints of dark chocolate and a faint, iron-like minerality. The first sip is taut and serious, but as it opens, layers of blackcurrant and plum emerge, woven together with savoury, graphite-like tannins. It’s dark and brooding but never heavy, finishing long and fresh, with an energy that suggests it’s only just getting started.

This is a serious Cabernet for the long haul. Tuck it away for a decade or more, and watch it evolve into something truly special. If patience isn’t your thing, a proper decant and a rare steak will do just fine.

97 points – “A deepish bright crimson purple. A touch more closed than the Yeringberg blend, but still with a lovely core of dark fruits, together with cedar, violets, and a hint of iodine on the perfumed and captivating bouquet. The medium-bodied and firmly structured palate is beautifully balanced, but with those firm, fine-grained tannins, this will require some patience to fulfil its potential.” – Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points – “Intense small-berried black and red fruits, quite some violet perfume, pencils, and tobacco, perhaps a little aniseed. It’s medium-bodied, quite ferrous and pencilly, the old liquid ‘mineral’ feel that great Cabernet often sports, compact and fine-grained tannin grip, freshness, and excellent length. Some redcurrant peeking through in the aftertaste along with some more savoury/earthy character. Beautiful wine. So good.” – Gary Walsh (The Winefront)

In the very best Cabernet years, we produce a single-variety Cabernet Sauvignon from our 1999 plantings—these being 2017, 2019, and 2022. A high-quality vintage produced excellent, intense wines in small quantities.

Picked on March 29 & April 1, 2022. Bottled in 2024. The fruit is all hand-picked and carefully sorted. The grapes are destemmed and crushed, then fermented in small open-top tanks and hand-plunged, spending 16 days on skins. The wine was aged in French oak barriques for 21 months, with about 30% new oak.

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon offers a more structured and tensile perspective on the vintage while retaining hallmark Yeringberg elegance. The deep-set nose has aromas of blackberry, black olive, and dark chocolate, together with notes of iodine and tobacco. The palate continues the theme, with a savoury, almost primal quality underpinning the intense, ripe Cabernet fruit. But there’s also freshness and lift that gives elegance and shape to the long finish.

Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."
