Description

The King's Wood is one of the premium, small-batch releases in the excellent Yangarra portfolio, and has long been one of McLaren Vale's better Shiraz.

This comes from a small southeast-facing sandy ironstone outcrop on rhe Yangarra vineyard. 15% whole bunches used in the ferment, the fruit hand-picked and carefully double-sorted for quality control before being hand-plunged and left to rest in a huge oak cask before bottling. Oak is well and truly in the background here, a mere player in the overall symphony of this spectacular wine.

It's a lifted, elegant, Northern-Rhone inspired Shiraz, with layers of black and blue fruits, grilled meats and savoury spice.  Winemaker Peter Fraser and team highlighting the quality and vibrancy of their fruit as the hero in this wine.

Poised, polished and powerful, it's a beautiful wine and a pristine example of McLaren Vale Shiraz.

"This is about as fine as shiraz can get in the Vale, boasting filigreed tannins and such a natural sense of freshness that it whets the palate and makes one hungry at first sip."

97 points - "This is about as fine as shiraz can get in the Vale, boasting filigreed tannins and such a natural sense of freshness that it whets the palate and makes one hungry at first sip. Northern Rhône-like scents of grilled meats, cloves, lilacs and Damson plums. A gentle cascade across the spicy framework to a long, immensely refined finish. All foudres vats, Austrian and French. Despite the full body, the wine is almost ethereal in the best sense, making for effortless drinking despite the profundity in the glass. This has such delicacy and cooler climatic tension to it that it is truly startling. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ned Goodwin (JamesSuckling.com)

95 points, "Deep and bright red-purple colour; the bouquet has a patina of meaty reduction at first, then terracotta earthiness, nicely ripe berry and plum aromas with it. The wine is intense and powerful, with a good backing of firm tannins which harmonise well, the finish long and balanced. Good now and has potential for the future." - Huon Hooke (Real Review)

95 points, "From Block 12 on a southeast-facing sandy ironstone outcrop; 15% whole bunches, the rest crushed; matured in French and Austrian foudre for 18 months. A very Rhône-like release this, with peppery spicing, blackberry pastille, moody blue florals, lavender, blueberry, cocoa powder and freshly ground star anise. The elegance here is admirable, with a tannin drive from front to back, and no sweet spot. A very fine release." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points, "Black fruit, nori, black olives, spice and some floral notes. It’s medium to full-bodied, saline and savoury, but carries a plenty of black and blue fruit. The tannin is firm and dry, plenty of almost dusty grip here, and the finish is long (and dry) and laced with black olive and exotic spice. You have to like them pretty saline, that’s the caveat, though I’m very sensitive to that character in wine, but it’s a good and distinctive Shiraz. No doubt." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Customer Reviews

Royal Oaks of the King’s Wood were forests planted by monarchs to build elegant cathedrals and church naves. The beautiful old French oak in our foudre vessels helps us make elegant wine by gradually polishing and protecting the brightest, spiciest south facing Shiraz we grow at Yangarra.

VINTAGE SUMMARY

The 2022 growing season followed very similar conditions to 2021, though slightly cooler. There were favourable winter rains and a mild flowering and fruit set period. The cool ripening period took place between late January through to harvest in March. Yields were well balanced, and we were pleased with the fruit ripeness, intensity, freshness, and natural acidity.

WINEMAKING

Sourced exclusively from Block 12 (2.3 Ha) which sits on a southeast facing, ironstone sandy outcrop. Picked on the 25th March. 15% whole bunch, remaining selectively berry sorted and crushed. Open fermenters and on skins for approximately 20 days. A gentle maceration principle of wetting the cap and only draining and returning when reductive. Wild yeast ferment. No pressings are used in this wine. Matured in French and Austrian oak for a total of 18 months. Kept on lees for 6 months in 25 hL French and Austrian oak foudre. Blended and further matured for 12 months in the same foudre. Bottled November 2023.

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate stands as one of the defining properties of the Blewitt Springs sub-region in McLaren Vale. Famous for its ancient North Maslin Sands and gnarly old bush vines, it is a single-vineyard estate dedicated exclusively to the varieties of the Southern Rhône.

For over a quarter of a century, the estate was shaped by the late Peter Fraser. Pete was not just the winemaker; he was the heartbeat of the operation and a visionary who fundamentally changed the way the world views Australian Grenache. He championed "purity, beauty and elegance," moving the needle away from high alcohol and extraction towards finesse and site expression. His pioneering work with ceramic eggs, amphorae and biodynamic farming helped earn Yangarra the title of International Winery of the Year twice.

While the loss of Pete is deeply felt across the industry, the wines remain a lasting testament to his genius. From the world-class Old Vine Grenache and the brooding Ironheart Shiraz to the textural, ceramic-aged Roussanne, every bottle reflects his philosophy of "always a little further." Today, Yangarra remains a certified biodynamic powerhouse and a benchmark producer, continuing to honour the legacy of one of the country's greatest winemakers.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
