Description

Winery of the Year & Best White Wine Collection
"Christian and Matthias Runkel continue to fly high"
- Eichelmann 2020

”One of the finest winegrowing estates anywhere in Rheinhessen.”
- Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) - the invitation-only elite of German viticulture

Bischel’s Johannisberg is a serious German Pinot Noir, and a wine we’re particularly pleased to have alongside the Rieslings. Matthias Runkel is the Burg-hound and his experience at Keller and New Zealand’s Neudorf comes into focus here, with an elegant but concentrated red from one of the family’s top sites.

The organically grown vines sit on terraces in Gau-Algesheim, with only a thin layer of loess over limestone. Water is scarce on these slopes, producing small berries with plenty of flavour and ripe tannin. Christian and Matthias hand-pick and destem the fruit, then ferment it with wild yeasts in open vats, working it gently by hand. Eighteen months in French and German oak follows before bottling without filtration.

Dark berries, earthy notes and spice lead, with a little tea and liquorice adding savoury detail. It’s medium-bodied and fresh, but with plenty of power and concentration too. Fine tannins build through a particularly long finish.

94 points - "How could you not fall in love with this extremely elegant pinot noir that combines freshness and elegance with excellent concentration on the sleek, medium-bodied palate? Wonderful, delicate forest floor, spice and licorice aromas. Then the fine tannins build in the long, moderately dry finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - JamesSuckling.com

Vineyard

The grapes come from the Johannisberg in Gau-Algesheim. They grow there in a very shallow loess layer on limestone rocks. The vines on the terraced slope receive very little water. This results in very small berried grapes with firm, fully ripe tannins and a very high concentration of extractives.

Vinification

Selective harvesting of the grapes by hand. After destemming, the grapes ferment with wild yeasts in open vats. The crushing of the must is done exclusively by hand. After fermentation, the wine is matured for 18 months in French and German oak barrels and is then bottled unfiltered.

Tasting notes

Stimulating aroma of cassis and fine wood followed by firm earthy aromas. In the mouth much spice, tea, liquorice and dense berry fruit. In the finish very powerful, concentrated with Burgundian impression and elegance.

Weingut Bischel

Two brothers, a family estate and some outstanding vineyard sites have made Weingut Bischel one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting emerging producers. Christian and Matthias Runkel have led the winemaking since 2006, building on the Appenheim estate their grandfather founded in 1968.

They brought home some impressive experience too. Matthias trained at Keller and New Zealand’s Neudorf, while Christian worked at Tim Adams in the Clare Valley and Backsberg in South Africa, before the pair turned their attention to the family vineyards.

The real draw is the land they farm. Their top Rieslings come from three distinctly different and remarkably old (up to 900 years!) sites: limestone-rich Hundertgulden, quartzite-based Scharlachberg and the volcanic soils of Heerkretz, giving them an unusually broad range of vineyard characters to explore.

Organic farming, carefully controlled yields and picking at the right moment underpin the approach, with use of wild yeasts, lees and old wood where necessary adding texture and complexity. Riesling is a major focus, but the brothers are equally serious about the Burgundy varieties, with freshness, structure and the ability to age central to their ambitions.

Bischel joined Germany’s prestigious VDP growers’ association in 2019, followed by Eichelmann’s award for the country’s Best White Wine Collection in 2020. This is a modern star of Rheinhessen, and tremendous value for money for Rieslings (and others) of this calibre.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
