Description

First created back in 1962, the historic Tyrrell’s Vat 9 label represents the absolute pinnacle of the family's Ashmans property. The 2022 release relies heavily on dry-farmed heritage plots like Weinkeller and Short Flat, where the vines are a minimum of 50 years old and dug deep into red clay over limestone.

The Tyrrell’s team are the undisputed masters of classic, mid-weighted Hunter Shiraz, and their work in 2022 is pure class. Handpicked and sorted in the vineyard, the distinct blocks were fermented in open-top vats before spending 14 months maturing in massive 2,700-litre French oak casks. This large-format wood approach ensures the vibrant fruit is never masked by heavy toast or sweet vanilla.

It has a complex, savoury nose of dark plum, cracked cacao, and a distinct rocky, earthy edge. On the palate, it delivers intense fruit without ever feeling thick or unctuous, with long-stretch tannins backed by a cool line of acidity that gives the wine superb lift and verve.

97 points - "This wine upholds its regal status as one of the finest reds from the region. Multilayered and serious, you'll find concentrated flavours laced within a velvety frame. The palate is commanding with its assertive intensity and its plush, expansive nature. You'll see blood plums, crushed sage, mulberries and wet soil. There's also some cracked cacao nib, pure blueberry and earthy rhubarb compote. The grapes are sourced from the best parcels from Tyrrell's Ashmans property. Pure class." - Toni Paterson (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Brilliant deep purple-red colour; red berry, bacon-fat, raspberry and pepper aromas, bright and fresh on palate, intense and above all supremely elegant, medium bodied and focused, long and intense but also subtle and refined. A great example of the medium bodied elegance of classic Hunter shiraz." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "The flagship. Perhaps overlooked, due to the commercial obsession with the single vineyard wines, a recent phenomenon. To do so is the drinker's loss, for this is exceptional. Alpine spruce, licorice root, blue and red-fruit allusions, with flecks of mint providing lift and verve. The coddled warmth of polished leather. Lovely stuff, defined by the long-stretch tannins, a manifest from a meld of older vine sites. Typically Hunter mid-weighted and savory. Drink or hold, but best after 2030. Screw cap." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

95+ points - "Pretty, perfumed, dark red fruit, a little spice, a light dusting of vanilla cocoa. Medium-bodied, composed and flavoursome, cool clear acidity, tannin is there adding gentle grip, kind of a powdery/chalky texture here, and the finish is long with fragrance, fine grip and a sort of cranberry acidity. It’s quite a delicate wine, and I reckon it will be terrific with some bottle age. Superb." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2022 Vat 9 Hunter Shiraz has a stony/rocky/earthy edge to the nose, and in the mouth, it is far more full-bodied and richer than the single-vineyard Shirazes tasted next to it. Here, we have raspberry, boysenberry, hints of chocolate, licorice, roast meat and graphite. It offers loads of wet metal and black spice through the finish, as well as black tea, bramble, clove and tobacco, to boot. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

Vat 9 Shiraz is sourced from the best parcels on the Tyrrell Estate Ashmans. These vines have a minimum age of 50 years, and are grown in red clay soils over limestone. Weinkeller and the Short Flat make up the majority of the Vat 9 blend.

Handpicked and sorted in the vineyard in the fourth week of February, the blocks were all fermented separately in open top vats. The individual wines were then matured in mostly newer French oak casks (2700L) until the Vat 9 blend was assembled in November 2022. The blend was then matured for a further five months before bottling.

Medium colour density with a glossy purple hue. The nose is complex showing darker summer fruits, with some liquorice and spice from the oak. The palate is intense in its fruit profile whilst remaining medium-bodied. The length and texture is the signature of this Vat 9, it shows impeccable balance and approachability yet is built for a long life in the cellar.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
