Description

Negro Amaro might be best known in southern Italy, but Dom Torzi’s Barossa take has carved out its own corner - lifted, dark-fruited and full of charm.

Grown on a single vineyard in Angaston, the vines are grafted onto 50-year-old Semillon roots, pulling all sorts of character from the ironstone and limestone soils. Fermented wild with a touch of whole bunch, then basket pressed and aged in older French oak for 16 months, it’s a hands-off style that lets the variety speak. No new oak, no filtration - just vibrant fruit, spice and texture.

The 2022 vintage gave a smooth ride, and the wine shows it. It’s mid-weight and generous, with plenty of black cherry, spice, and a hint of dark chocolate and licorice. Tannins are fine, the finish is clean, and it all hangs together beautifully.

A smart, slightly offbeat Barossa red with loads of personality and zero pretence.

Vintage
A great mild vintage allowed flavours to build slowly. This foothill vineyard in Angaston produced a deliciously showy, mid-weight fruited release bursting with character.

Winemaking
Made via 15% whole bunch wild yeast ferment in small open-top fermenters with soft pump-overs, basket pressed to barrel to complete fermentation. Bottled unfiltered.

Style
A truly charismatic red table wine with highly perfumed dark red spiced summer fruits. The palate features black cherry, spice, bitter dark chocolate, and a touch of blackstrap licorice. The finish is generous, fresh, and lively with fine tannins.

Torzi Matthews

Some years back, noted Australian wine writer Philip White called Domenic Torzi 'Australia's Best Bargain Winemaker'. Today, that statement still could not be more accurate.

The wines from Dom Torzi and Tracy Matthews are some of the best buys in the Barossa Valley and the country. Alongside their excellent classic range of old vine Barossa Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling, they make a small amount of fascinating Italian variety wines, inspired by their Italian heritage.

At every price point, these wines hugely and consistently overdeliver and are simply a must-buy for any lover of honest, delicious Barossan wines.

"You’d have to put Dom Torzi’s Torzi Matthews wines into the ‘some of best value/most consistent wines in the country’ list, right near the shiny top. A touch of magic. An eye on drinkability. Considered vineyard sources. Gentle overlay of winemaking. He gets it. Really gets it." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
