Description

The Esprit is Peter Schell's Grenache dominant blend, made from vines up to 160 years old.

The Esprit sees Grenache united with its old friends Mataro and Shiraz, however the quality of the Grenache fruit demands front and centre stage in this iteration of the blend.

This, as with all Spinifex's wines, is balanced to perfection. If you love old vine Barossa Grenache, value-wise the Esprit is as good as you will find from any producer in the region.

94 points
The 2022 Esprit release sees a blend of 86/6/4/4% grenache/shiraz/cinsault/mataro and it's sinewy and spicy this year. Red plum, raspberry and cherry, dried herbs and exotic spice with hints of pomegranate, pressed flowers, snapped twigs and ginger cake. Bright, stony acidity provides a bright pulse as the wine sashays energetically across the palate, finishing spice, red-fruited and moreish."

93 Points - "This is gorgeous. Mellifluous. It makes me realize just how ably a full-weighted wine like this, an intuitive Rhone-inspired blend of grenache, shiraz, mataro and cinsault, fits into the Barossan landscape. And with that, the contemporary Australian one. Peaty smokiness, charcuterie, clove, lilac, poached damson, ume, raspberry and Aussie scrub. While the finish is subtly drying and almost chalky, the tannic cladding confers a welcome savoriness. Drink or hold." - Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

92 Points - "Mataro (4%), grenache (86%), cinsault (4%), shiraz (6%). Alcohol warmth has to be acknowledged but from there it’s pure and delicious. Red licorice, black cherry, sweet spice and lavender with fistfuls of rich red earth littered throughout. It’s lively, frisky even, and yet it’s lashed with complex flavour, in the most lovely of ways. Great drinking to be had here." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

    A taste of Spain

Before Covid, I would visit Catalonia often and I adore a good Priorat. This wine reminded me a lot of those happier days, a mid weight bright and very spicy-aromatic wine that jumps from the glass. But in my imagination even some of the terroir was there with slate-like tartness, savoury tannins but balanced. Perfect by itself but matched a manchego cheese beautifully.

    A great tasting, value wine.

Like all of peter Schell's wines, it's top notch. Drinks well now and can only improve in the short/medium term.

A perfumed, aromatically deep Barossa red displaying a bright core of red cherry, tart raspberry, plum and tamarillo framed by both high toned dried rose petal and violet florals, and hazelnut, mace and blonde tobacco spice elements.

A medium weight and focussed palate that builds in weight and intensity in the mouth. Spiced plum, rhubarb and cherry flavours on attack turn to darker fruits and savoury, fresh drying tannin and plum skin like acids. Whilst strong and intense, the overall balance leans to levity, transparency of flavour and freshness.

Spinifex Wines

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.
