Description

The Basso is a lighter, fresher, more 'smashable' version of Grenache from Steve Pannell.

It's Steve's minimal-intervention wine. It's bottled with a minimal amount of sulphur, unfined and unfiltered.

Steve's wines are all about melding with our Australian culture and this is the perfect fit for BBQs and beach cricket.

It's lighter in body, dappled with the lacy tannins and spice of early-picked Grenache - It's just a great anytime/anywhere red from one of the country's finest winemakers.

The 2022 Basso Grenache is ferrous and floral, and the palate follows with loads of graphite tannin. This is silty and exotically spiced, with a cavalcade of sumac, pomegranate and paprika dolce. It's a gorgeous wine. The fruit here was handpicked from a dry-grown vineyard in Blewitt Springs, and it is sensational. Tannins are the calling card of Steve Pannell's Grenaches and are undoubtedly what makes the wines great. That and the inherent freshness the wines. Bottled with 30 parts total sulfur, 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

A low-sulphur offering of buoyant fragrance, with squishy red and black berries, black cherry, licorice pastille, violet and ground, dried orange peel. For all its foot-in-the-door approachability, Steve Pannell never has food far from his mind, and this is structured with both ample tannin and acid with the intent of being splashed at table and across a range of dishes – grilled eggplant and peppers, lamb skewers and charred octopus come to mind.

    Medium bodied, lively and wonderfully aromatic, with raspberry, musk, cherries and a hint of spice, as described. Well worth trying!

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate.
