Description

The Tradition Red from Place of Changing Winds marries the elegance of Macedon Ranges Pinot Noir with the robust character of Heathcote Syrah. This blend creates a vibrant, charming red wine, paying homage to the legendary Maurice O’Shea wines of the 1950s and 1960s.

Owner Rob Walters combines 40% Pinot Noir from Macedon with 60% Syrah from Heathcote and Harcourt. The wine aged for a year in a mix of large and small neutral oak barrels, finishing in a steel tank and a 600-litre Stockinger cask. This process ensures a bright, perfumed, and juicy wine, that's fruit-focused rather than shrouded in oak.

On the palate, Tradition Red is soft, smooth, and effortlessly drinkable. The Pinot Noir offers elegance, while the Syrah adds depth and spice. This blend results in a wine that is both sophisticated and approachable.

The Tradition Red is a model for modern Australian red wine, perfect for enjoying now or aging further. It showcases Rob Walters' dedication to creating wines of exceptional character and charm.

95 points - "It’s not heavy but there’s impressive intensity of flavour here. It tastes of sheer plum, dark chocolate, roasted nuts and sweet cherry, with woodsy spice and cedarwood characters as part of the veneer. There’s texture, there’s twigs, there’s pure, perfectly ripened fruit, and there’s a firm stamp of integrated tannin. There’s some char to the aftertaste, which is not a distraction and is not a negative. There’s a lot to delve into here. It’s excellent." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

93 points - "Here is 60% syrah from Heathcote and Harcourt with a bolstering remainder of pinot noir. A variety of vessels cajole the wine to bottle. This feels meaty and sleek in the same breath. A whiff of woody spices and undergrowth before a compote of forest berries with a high note of tart cherry. Similar to taste, a sluice of fine, grainy tannin in tow, on medium weight and very persistent. It’s a slurpier red with plenty of charisma and high drinkability." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

    Excellent blend

Superb blend, the smoky brambly Syrah mixes beautifully with the tight tannins of the POCW pinot. Very dry, very drinkable.

    Great wine

Very interesting combo and worth a try. Enjoyed

Made only in suitable years, this wine is inspired by the era-defining Syrah/Pinot blends crafted by Hunter legend Maurice O’Shea in the 1940s and ’50s. This release is a blend of 40% Pinot from estate vines and 60% Syrah from Heathcote and Harcourt. It spent the first year in a mix of large and small oak barrels, mostly neutral, with the last phase of aging in steel tank and 600-litre Stockinger cask. It was bottled at the end of November 2023. The result is a bright, perfumed, juicy wine. Although delicious now, it will certainly age well.

Place of Changing Winds

The Place of Changing Winds vineyard was planted by notable Australian wine importer, journalist, and author, Rob Walters.

Rob had hunted for a special site to plant in the cooler climes of Australia for many years. One day, esteemed grower/winemaker at Bindi, Michael Dhillon, called him and said, "Rob, I've found your vineyard."

The site sits at 500m above sea level in the Macedon Ranges. Rob has farmed it organically from the start. Planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at an incredible average of 15,000 vines per hectare, this is one of the most exciting emerging viticultural projects in the country.

New to the Place of Change of Winds range are wines from Heathcote high country, organically planted in collaboration with Rhone legend Alain Graillot. These delicious Syrahs, and a Marsanne for the first time from the 2019 vintage, were previously under the Graillot Australia label but are now fully vinified at Place of Changing Winds in Macedon.
