Description

From the north-facing slopes of Gladysdale, the Hazeldene Vineyard has become one of Oakridge’s most expressive Pinot sites. The red volcanic soils here deliver a natural generosity of fruit, while the cooler Upper Yarra air preserves the clarity and lift that defines Dave Bicknell’s style.

The 2022 release is delicious from the first pour – bright cherry-red in the glass, with a rush of red cherry, rose petals, and a wisp of chopped sage. There’s a nod to nostalgia in the raspberry shortcake biscuit notes, wrapped around a core of just-ripe strawberry and red liquorice.

On the palate, that brightness is channelled into a fine lattice of fruit and tannin – raspberry, cherry, and strawberry riding a line of precise acidity. It’s an elegant, complex Pinot, with a little more generosity than some Oakridge sites, but the same pinpoint detail that makes these single-vineyard wines so sought after.

Drink now for its perfume and charm, or it'll develop nicely over the medium term in the cellar.

96 points - "This is my pick among the suite of pinot in this good, albeit, miniscule yielding vintage. Another late and cool one, yet there is succulence founded on deft extraction, alongside impeccably architected tannins, as svelte as they are strident and long. Accents of red cherry, rhubarb and peony, with lilac and florals aplenty. Impressive vinosity and sap. Depth and layers. Whole-bunch (30%), impeccably integrated. A drive of pixelated freshness pronounces thrilling length and real class. Drinkable now, but best after 2026." - Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)
95 points - "From ’98 plantings of MV6 at Gladysdale; 30% whole bunches. Matured in 300L and 500L casks (less than 10% new). Pretty and delicate with its aromas of alpine strawberries, rose petal and spice. More depth than the ’21. Impeccably balanced and light on its feet, fine grained and ever so gently chewy tannins round out a wine that’s approachable now but will keep." - Philip Rich (Halliday’s Wine Companion)
95 points - "Red cherries and strawberries rush at you with open arms followed by a flash of blue fruit. Dangerously silky, soft spices ebb and flow teasing out a fabulous moresihness. Wonderfully weighted, tilled earth, prosciutto and a dash of orange peel add savoury nuances. There is plenty of depth and flavour here and it’s hard to resist the urge that keeps calling you back. Still with some tension tightening the frame, this will only get better with bottle age. All up, it’s a delicious Pinot Noir from Oakridge." - QWine Reviews

Oakridge

Oakridge is one of the Yarra Valley's most respected wineries.

Under the direction of master winemaker Dave Bicknell, it has been a major player in defining the modern styles of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Yarra over the last decade.

From the elite 864 range to the amazing value Over The Shoulder range, there's quality at the core of everything Oakridge puts its hand to. Bicknell has rare touch as a winemaker, carefully eeking out the individual character of each vineyard he works with.

Each wine speaks with absolute clarity of where it comes from. These are excellent, masterfully crafted wines and great value to boot.
