Description

This release follows the same logic as Nick Spencer's "Non-Fiction Pinot Noir": premium fruit originally destined for a top-tier blend, bottled on its own at an accessible price. Sourced from the Gundagai region, this Shiraz was grown and vinified to be a core component of Nick Spencer’s flagship "Medium Dry Red" (MDR).

The makeup of the MDR changes every year depending on what the vintage delivers. In 2022, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec were particularly structural, meaning the final blend required less Shiraz than usual. While this parcel of Shiraz was "ripe, juicy and delicious," it simply wasn't needed to balance the blend that year.

Rather than selling it off, Nick bottled it under the Non-Fiction label. This is a generous, fruit-forward Shiraz that shows both dark, lush fruit and a sprinkling of white pepper. It is a straightforward, delicious red that punches well above its weight. With only 200 dozen produced, at this price, if you are a Shiraz lover, this falls straight into no-brainer territory.

"Spencer’s wines and their style belong in the “if you know, you know” camp. $16.50 is an absolute clear-out bargain. I’d suggest. This wine feels and tastes both natural and polished. It throws meaty spice, peppercorns and floral characters into the mix as well, and is more-ish plus plus plus. This wine is a gift to wine drinkers/lovers."

93 points - "There should be more of this kind of thing. i.e. hold your line on your premium offerings and, at the same time, give wine drinkers a win for their everyday drinking... It’s medium in weight, cool, well ripened, flashed with herbs and spices but run essentially with red berried fruit flavour. It’s open for business but, despite the above, is well shaped, and feels complete. It feels very Nick Spencer, if you don’t mind me saying: it has that free, almost minimalist feel, no clutter, just well chosen flavours and forms, which is exactly how the wines under the Nick Spencer Wines label present. Long Story Short

The 2022 vintage was exceptional for Cabernet Sauvignon, and as we finalised the blend for our 2022 Medium Dry Red (MDR), we opted to use more Cabernet and less Shiraz than usual. As a result, we had some surplus Shiraz, which we’ve now bottled under the Non Fiction label.

In more detail

Our Medium Dry Red (MDR) is typically a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and occasionally Tempranillo. Each vintage, the components of the blend behave differently, so we don’t follow a set formula. Instead, we rely on instinct and adjust the blend based on the characteristics of each grape. In 2022, while the Shiraz was ripe, juicy, and delicious, it didn’t provide the structure we needed for the blend. As a result, we used more Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, and less Shiraz, in the final MDR blend. This left us with 2,000 litres of excellent Shiraz, which we’ve now bottled and will be releasing as the Non Fiction Shiraz.

Nick Spencer Wines

Nick Spencer is one of NSW's most decorated winemakers. Over the span of more than two decades, he has become perhaps the state's most outspoken advocate for the potential of the regions of the NSW High Country, in particular, Tumbarumba and Gundagai.

Nick's wines exemplify balance, style, immense drinkability and exceptional value for money. As his label has expanded, his winemaking has become more adventurous, now incorporating the use of amphora, sulphur-free bottlings and a more stripped-back winemaking style to highlight the quality of the fruit that these lesser-known NSW regions can produce.

He is one of the most important producers in NSW today and is the touchstone of quality for the state.
