Description

Municipal Wines is the small winemaking (and sake...) project of Matt Froude, where the focus is on making Victorian High Country wines with freshness, texture and plenty of character. Matt’s not afraid to push the boundaries a bit, and this Savagnin is one of the better local examples we've tried.

The fruit here comes off the Whitegate vineyard in the Strathbogie Ranges, picked by hand and made in very small quantities – only 164 cases were bottled. Fermentation kicked off in tank before finishing in barrel, with regular lees stirring to build texture and give the wine a bit more complexity. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The result is crisp and mineral with bright citrus and green apple at its core, but it’s the savoury, chalky texture that makes it really interesting. A terrific example of this much-loved edgy variety.

Tasting Note

Colour: Super clear and bight very pale straw.
Aroma: Very complex with finger lime, sweet lemon, white peach, plum blossom, flint, pronounced minerality, a creamy note from the lees stirring and a hint of almond meal.
Palate: Textural and complex with fantastic length and wonderful mouthfeel showing lime, pineapple, wonderful minerality, saline notes and a lovely barrel ferment character. The wine evolves as it moves along the tongue.

Fermentation continued in tank for the first seven days before being transferred to barrels for the remaining 44 days of fermentation. Lees stirring was undertaken twice weekly to increase complexity and mouthfeel.

Maturation: Following fermentation the wine underwent partial MLF, remaining in barrels for a further two months with Lees stirring weekly to improve mouth feel and complexity. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
