Description

The famed old vines on the Mount Mary estate yield some of the finest Chardonnay in the district.

Sensitive winemaking from Sam Middleton and respect for the fruit is at the core of this wine. Sam looks to support the Chardonnay with high quality oak, a relatively hard pressing to extract more in the way of texture and some lees stirring. Malo is avoided to retain acid purity. Finesse is the name of the game here.

Sam Middleton pulls together an exceptional Yarra Chardonnay. It's wines like this that really showcase just how marvellous Aussie wines can be - he's truly nailed it.

"Powerful and structured on the palate, finishing saline and long. A great and long-lived Mount Mary chardonnay in the making."

"I really like this wine, more so every year. Stylistically, it sits in a classical, nutty, creamy sort of space; the sophistication of it seems to be refined each vintage, which sends it in the right direction, for my tastes anyway. "
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

97 points - "Hand picked, 20% whole-bunch pressed, the balance crushed and destemmed. Matured in French puncheons and barriques (30% new) for 11 months. Interestingly, Mount Mary offers their mailing customers the choice of either Diam 30 or screwcap. A very bright green gold. Smells super with its aromas of perfectly ripened white nectarines, orange blossom and some complex matchstick and oyster shell notes. Powerful and structured on the palate, finishing saline and long. A great and long-lived Mount Mary chardonnay in the making." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "I really like this wine, more so every year. Stylistically, it sits in a classical, nutty, creamy sort of space; the sophistication of it seems to be refined each vintage, which sends it in the right direction, for my tastes anyway. On the nose, this 2022 Chardonnay presents salted cashews, white spring florals, firm nectarine, Golden Delicious apple and a splay of beeswax/tatami mat nuances and brine. On the palate, the wine builds on the path set forth by the bouquet—it is rich and wide, textural and fulsome yet with acidity and length that drags the width of the wine out to a focused and long close. It fermented in barrel, with malolactic fermentation eschewed, and it matured in a selection of French barriques (30% new), older barrels and large cask (500 liters). Hard pressing constructs the phenolic shape of the wine—a great thing—and the wine was matured for 11 months. The acidity through the finish is salty and juicy, and it leaves an uptick of energy and life in the mouth once the wine is gone. This is really good. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

97 points - "Wonderfully minerally and discrete, with aromas of lemon confit, gun smoke, lanolin, beeswax and honeysuckle. The palate is extremely tightly wound with laser-like acidity, giving notes of grapefruit pith, candied lime zest, orange blossoms and river stones. Minerally and energetic with an underlying texture and power. Excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

95 points - "A whiff of smoke and struck match, peach, green melon, grapefruit, some lime zest, cashew and cinnamon, chamomile perfume too. It’s a fleshy wine, delivering plenty of Chardonnay flavour, fine chalk powder texture, preserved lemon, some nutty savoury oak flavours, with a bright citrus drizzled finish of excellent length and power." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

We aim to make a Chardonnay with great length, which reaches a balance between richness and elegance. While some techniques are borrowed from the Burgundians, there are some departures from traditional practice in response to local factors, which ensures a unique wine. The most notable of these is that our Chardonnay does not undergo malolactic fermentation, as our local climate leaves the fruit with ideal acidity when it is picked. Our Chardonnay is matured in 30% new French oak barriques with the remainder in older barrels and large casks (1500L). The entire production is barrel fermented. Relatively hard pressing is employed to give the wine texture and lees stirring is carried out to add complexity and body. The Chardonnay is matured in barrel for 11 months prior to bottling.
