Description

Moorooduc has long been one of the quiet achievers of the Mornington Peninsula, and their Estate Pinot is a great place to get a feel for what they’re all about. This 2022 release was shaped by a tough growing season - cool, wet and windy through spring, with yields right down across the board. But the result? Small berries, thick skins, and a wine that punches well above its weight for depth and detail.

Hand-picked, wild fermented and matured in French oak (22% new), it’s built with care from the ground up. There’s more structure here than you might expect, with a bit of edge and grip wrapped around generous dark red fruits and spice.

It’s got plenty of immediate appeal, but the bones to go a few more years in the cellar too.

    2022 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir

    Great value lovely pinot noir

Pale ruby garnet in colour with a lifted nose of ripe red and black cherries, black rose petals, a touch of pomegranate and coriander seed and cardamom spice. On the palate the red cherry dominates with subtle spice and floral lavender and rosewater notes. The tannins are velvety and the acid is firm and crisp. A delicious, long mouthful of wine, with tangy pomegranate molasses on the finish. Enjoy with a lamb tagine, or flame grilled quail. Delicious to drink right now, or will cellar beautifully for at least 10 years.

The 2022 Vintage

Battered and bruised, a year you had to be brave if you were a grapevine. October and November 2021 were nasty. A significant rainstorm event, along with cold, windy and wet weather throughout this period contributed to what was a tough flowering and fruit set. Damage wasn’t confined to the pollination process, but young leaves and canopies copped a beating, resulting in subsequent lateral growth in canopies. It was a hard year, with meticulous work required in the vineyard throughout. The weather gods decided enough was enough: Summer settled, and mild weather prevailed. Resultant yields were low to say the least, with many areas of vineyards producing less than half their usual quantity. One outcome of the difficult flowering period was the prevalence of smaller berries, resulting from limited set of seeds within berries. This produced wines with intensity and structure from a larger than usual grape skin contribution in the winery. Wines evolved balance and finesse throughout their time in barrel.
