Description

You don't usually associate great Chardonnay makers with winemakers of the Barossa Valley, however, British-born artisan, Michael Hall bucks the trend.

His fruit source is all important. He heads to the heartland of premium Chardonnay fruit from the Adelaide Hills, the Piccadilly Valley, for his top release. A small block of Chardonnay nestled against My Lofty managed by Bernie and Sandy Swaby, supplies the fruit.

It's a full-bodied, elegant Chardonnay that shows a depth of white stonefruit, a hint of grapefruit and perfectly judged spicy oak.

95 points
"A classy, mid-weighted chardonnay of exactitude, intensity and poise. Salty and long."
- Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

95 Points - "This plays a reductive hand, so often embedded in the proprietary deck here. Plays it very well, too. Succulence and tension define the rivulets of freshness, citrus and stone fruits as they teem long, buttressed by impeccably placed oak. Oatmeal, tatami straw, cashew and corn husk convey a whiff of generosity to placate the highly strung nature of affairs. A classy, mid-weighted chardonnay of exactitude, intensity and poise. Salty and long. Drinkable now, but best after 2026. Screw cap." - Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

92 Points - "Light-medium yellow, bright and fresh, the bouquet has smoked-meats/charcuterie notes over grapefruit, passionfruit tropical aromas and flavours. In the mouth it's grapy and fruit-sweet, pleasantly flavoured and straightforwrad, with medium length and nice harmony. Very drinkable young but would take a few years in the cellar too." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

92 Points - "The 2022 Chardonnay leads with lemongrass and hay, peach and dragon fruit. The wine is gently bitter and sort of spicy, but I do like the draw of flavor across the palate and through to the finish. I like this wine, but I prefer the Sang de Pigeon Chardonnay, which I find more intriguing and satisfying. I'm glad I got to taste them side by side. 13.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

    Lovely Adelaide Hills Chardy

This is always a pleasant wine to drink whether at lunch or dinner.

Bernie Swaby’s Garden Block lies next to the Mount Lofty Botanical Gardens, established to benefit from the cool air currents descending from Mt Lofty in the Adelaide Hills. It lies on soils of humus and sandy loam over clay and ripens late due to cool summer nights and chilly autumns. Average winter rains were followed by a mild summer. Yields were low with light bunches of excellent quality.

For wine nerds like me: Hand-picked on the 30th of March, destemmed and pressed to French oak puncheons (30% new), 80% malolactic fermentation, matured for 11 months on yeast lees, filtered and bottled.

1380 bottles produced.
