Description

Maxwell’s Silver Hammer has always been one of those no-fuss, crowd-pleasing Shiraz, and the 2022 is right on song. The fruit comes from a mix of estate and local vineyards around McLaren Vale, with a simple approach in the winery that keeps the focus on flavour and drinkability. A bit of time in French and American oak rounds things out without taking over.

What lands in the glass is bold and generous but still really approachable – dark fruits, a touch of spice, and that smooth, satisfying feel that makes you want another glass straight away. It’s got enough structure to sit happily in the cellar for a few years, but honestly, this is the kind of Shiraz you’ll be cracking open on a Friday night with pizza, BBQ or anything hearty.

The kicker here is the value – this is proper McLaren Vale Shiraz that doesn’t cost the earth, and that’s exactly why it’s been a fan favourite for years.

"This somehow manages to feel old school and new school at once... It goes all right, and is very good value."
- Campbell Mattinson

91 points - "This somehow manages to feel old school and new school at once. It’s in a good place as a result. It show characters of toast, peppercorn, resin and cream, but then it’s also fresh – and energetic – with raspberry, plum and floral fruit flavour. It’s warm, fresh, lively and textural at once. It goes all right, and is very good value." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

91 points - "New oak is low here, around 5% (French and American), but there’s likely some more recent fills, with some walnut/hazelnut husk and vanillin notes and structuring, woody grip. This is always the generous but not too overt Maxwell shiraz, offering dark fruit, some rum and raisin spice notes, hints of dark chocolate and anise. So too, here. There’s also a little ferrous minerality, adding savoury detail." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine
Sourced from numerous parcels on the Maxwell estate, the Shiraz for Silver Hammer consistently delivers quality year on year. The winery is located on the south-facing slope of a limestone hill in McLaren Vale, providing excellent drainage and an ideal environment for Shiraz vineyards of the highest quality.

Vintage Conditions
McLaren Vale’s 2022 vintage will be remembered as one of the region’s great years. Excellent balance, flavour, colour, and structure were achieved despite challenging weather elsewhere in Australia. After a wet winter and mild spring, conditions improved, with a late cold snap in November reducing vine vigour. Summer was warm and dry without excessive heat, followed by a perfect autumn, resulting in excellent fruit quality and slightly later harvest compared to recent years.

Colour & Aroma
Deep purple in colour with aromas of rich dark forest fruits and hints of toasty oak.

Palate
Vibrant and juicy dark berry fruits—blackberry and dark cherry—layered with silky tannins. The palate is well-rounded, with oak and bright acidity providing balance.

Pairing
Thai slow-cooked beef and sweet potato curry.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
