Description

If you like your Cabernets powerful, graceful, complex and with a certain 'je ne sais quoi', this one from Joshua Cooper fits the bill perfectly.

Made from a parcel of grapes from a family friend in Balgownie, these old vines produce gorgeously intense yet pure fruit. The character of the old vines shines throughout the wine, giving ripe and juicy purple/black berries, peppery spice, a long length and gorgeous tannins. Well balanced and perfectly put together.

An incredibly distinct and unforgettable wine.

"A significant cabernet for Australian wine, again. Elegant, refined... The wine is delicious and refreshing while being backed with fruit... Fine, fine wine. Watch it go."

96+ points - "Very cool that Balgownie, already excellent, gets a go from Josh Cooper here. And go he does. A significant cabernet for Australian wine, again. Elegant, refined, silky as with an authority of silty tannin that stretches long into the distance. Blue fruits here, violets and lavender, green olive, tobacco, faint eucalyptus, rosemary and sweet spices. It sits at medium weight, poised, everything seamless and in its place and delivers a rush from the perfume, evocative, serious all over. The wine is delicious and refreshing while being backed with fruit, tannin, cool acid profile, mineral charm, herbal elements, savoury qualities. Fine, fine wine. Watch it go." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

    Superb wine

Very interesting wine. Quite savoury and herbal. Medium weight. Complex. Beautiful length and tanin profile.

Deep, dark garnet. A wine which immediately makes one sit up and focus. Incredibly refined and complex with iron, sweet cassis, cedar spice, violet and rose, air reveals infinite nuance and detail.

The palate is flooded with wave upon wave of Cabernet fruit, braced by a strict but not overbearing tannic structure, finishing with sweet violet and cassis.

Joshua Cooper

Joshua Cooper is the son of Nelly and Allan Cooper, the founders of the acclaimed Cobaw Ridge winery in the Macedon Ranges.

Born and raised on the top-tier cool climate wines of his family, Josh's wines have a delicacy and unforced feel to them. As you might imagine, growing up in the Macedon Ranges, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are two varieties he particularly excels with, as too is his great love, which is Cabernet. He sources his fruit from a series of growers across central Victoria who farm with a like-minded philosophy of organic farming and sustainability, with plans to plant his own vineyard in Macedon in the future.

Josh makes only a small amount of each wine and they are in high demand from those who want to get in early on the next generation of Cooper. He is undoubtedly one of the country's most exciting and acclaimed young winemakers, being named James Halliday's Best New Winery for 2024 as well as the winner of Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine’s Young Winemaker of the Year 2020.
