Description

The 2022 John Duval Entity is a masterclass in refined Barossa Shiraz, designed for those who appreciate elegance without sacrificing the bold, unmistakable power of the region. Sourced from meticulously selected old-vine vineyards across the Barossa and Eden Valleys, this vintage offers a glimpse into the heart of what makes Barossa Shiraz so special.

On the nose, you'll find an alluring bouquet of dark berries, black plum, and cherry, accented by whispers of anise and clove. The palate is a rich tapestry of layered red fruits, dark chocolate, and earthy undertones, all wrapped up in fine French oak, 28% of which is new. It’s a wine with serious structure, depth, and sophistication—perfectly balanced for early drinking, but with the muscle to cellar for 15 years or more.

This is more than just another Barossa Shiraz; it's John Duval’s pursuit of harmony and finesse, a wine that echoes his decades of experience at Penfolds and his ongoing passion for showcasing the character of Barossa’s old vines.

“Velvety opulence speaks from the moment this hits your tongue until the last drop disappears. It’s a luxurious take on the grandeur of fit, medium-bodied Shiraz... Bravo! Further ageing will only enhance its beauty.”
- David Sly (Decanter)

96 points “Velvety opulence speaks from the moment this hits your tongue until the last drop disappears. It’s a luxurious take on the grandeur of fit, medium-bodied Shiraz, putting plush red berry characteristics on a pedestal, encasing them gently in oak and fine-gain tannin, then allowing them to saunter gracefully down the long catwalk before sashaying out the exit curtain. Bravo! Further ageing will only enhance its beauty.” - David Sly (Decanter)

95 points - ”A vibrantly coloured multi-subregional blend that shows plum, black cherry and blackberry fruits cut with hints of baking spice, cedar, vanillin, mace, licorice and earth. A thickly shouldered wine, plush with ripe fruit and creamy oaken nuance finishing long and elemental with fine, chalky tannins and a sense of mineral definition.” - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Intense notes of vanilla and spiced black plums hit you initially, and then subtle top notes of wild roses emerge. red berries take the lead on the palate along with sweet spices and a spine of bitter chocolate tannins. This is an impressive Barossan, it's ripe and full-bodied with plenty of freshness and channels of nuance to keep you engaged." - Gabrielle Poy (The Real Review)

94 points - "Textbook Barossa Shiraz. It’s spicy, blue and black fruit, cherry, aniseed, a little tar and mint. Medium to full-bodied, acidity is crisp and lively, baked raspberry with some chocolate cake, a fine sooty grip to tannin, a little dried herb and reduction to close on a finish of good length. Yes yes. Nice nice. Expressive and bright Barossa Shiraz." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    Another beautifully balanced wine Duval

Nice bark berry fruit balanced with spice. The tannins are dusty leaving the wine with a dry firm finish

A culmination of over 40 years experience producing world class Shiraz from exceptional Barossa vineyards.
John’s approach to making Barossa Shiraz continues unchanged, and maturation of selected parcels of old vine fruit in French oak is fundamental to producing Entity - an elegant Shiraz that is true to the Barossa.
