Description

The Lodge Hill Shiraz is a smart snapshot of what Clare does well - flavour-packed, medium-bodied Shiraz that’s both approachable and true to its place.

Planted back in 1979 on the eastern edge of Clare, the Lodge Hill site brings cool nights and rocky soils into the mix, giving this wine its lift and structure. It’s made by the Barry family - stalwarts of the region since the ’70s - now in their third generation and still turning out wines that overdeliver.

Expect dark berries, a bit of spice and earth, and just enough oak to round it out. Nothing overworked, just a solid, well-made red with regional charm.

94 points - "Layers of blackberries, mulberries, dark chocolate and spices. The palate is medium-bodied with finely tuned tannins, the bright acidity leading into a focused, peppery and textural finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - JamesSuckling.com

A pastoral run dating back to 1839, and originally named Wolta Wolta, the 329 acre Lodge Hill Vineyard is situated on the Eastern Ranges, five kilometres east of the Clare township. Jim Barry purchased the land for The Lodge Hill Vineyard in 1977 as he was sure it would “produce some of the best Riesling in the Clare Valley.” However in 1979, Jim Barry planted his first Shiraz in this location, and it has gone on to produce our award winning Lodge Hill Shiraz.

AROMA

Perfectly ripe black plum and forest berry compote, with hints of pepper, spice, and a touch of sweet-cured meat on the nose.

PALATE

The palate is coiled and purposeful on entry and feels like it wants to explode. With a satin flow, a bright core of berry fruits and hints of spicy oak, this a very moreish wine.

Jim Barry

Jim Barry Wines is a family affair in the Clare Valley.

Founded by one of SA's most influential wine figures, this producer has been one of the most acclaimed in the region since it began in 1974.

They focus primarily on traditional Clare Valley varieties, with a myriad of laser-sharp Rieslings, powerful Shiraz and intense Cabernet blends making up the foundations of the range. With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.
