Description

The 2022 Keyneton Euphonium continues Henschke’s long tradition of blending estate-grown Shiraz with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot – a classic Barossa-Eden style that still holds serious appeal. The fruit comes from mature vineyards across both regions, with old-vine Shiraz lending depth and richness, and the Cabernets bringing structure and drive.

It’s named after the euphonium once played in the Keyneton village brass band – a nod to the family’s roots in the area – but the wine itself is firmly focused on balance and detail. The 2022 vintage was shaped by a cooler, slower season, which shows in the freshness and precision of the wine.

The blend was matured for 18 months in 100% French oak hogsheads, around a quarter of them new, adding shape and savoury complexity without smothering the fruit. It’s drinking well now, but will comfortably age for 10–15 years if you’ve got the patience.

96 points - "A vibrant dark maroon hue, the nose exhibits notes of coffee beans, mocha, kirsch, tobacco leaves, bergamot, cassis, cold tea and licorice. This is elegant and yet with intensity. Exciting stuff. Balanced, focused, fresh and energetic, there are silky tannins and momentous length. This will drink beautifully for at least fifteen years. As good a Euphonium as I can recall." - Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot)

96 points - "Deeply perfumed and spicy, with aromas of blackcurrants, roasted coffee beans, cedar, blood plums, cured meat and cassis. The palate is seamlessly integrated, with a velvety texture, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity that leads into a supple yet structured finish with lingering flavors of bitter chocolate, mulberries, cigar box and paprika. Made from a blend of 59% shiraz, 33% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc and 2% merlot. So much polish and class." - JamesSuckling.com

95 points - "Good depth of ruby to garnet colour, showing some development appropriate to its age. The bouquet presents vanilla, chocolate, raspberry and sundry dried herbs, sweeter and increasingly cassisy as it aired. The palate is medium-full bodied and supple in its texture, with a fruit-sweet middle which smacks of crushed raspberries, then a supple tannin finish. Delicious—and it's a wine that responds well to generous airing." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 points - "A blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. This is right up there with any previous releases under this label. The oak has been well chosen to suit the fruit. It’s 20% new French and an 80% mix of seasoned French and American oak. Bright, plummy, raspberry-like fruit with a little blackberry complexity on the nose. The palate is medium bodied and elegantly structured, displaying a vibrant fruit energy and purity supported by fine chalky tannins. Impressive wine from an excellent vintage." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

94 points - "In challenging vintages like 2022, the art of the blender is highlighted, indeed, it deserves to be celebrated. Relying on one grape variety can be tricky when the weather turns cool and wet, but four? That’s a safe winemaking insurance policy. With Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot sourced from across the Barossa Valley (40%) and Eden Valley (60%), Euphonium delivers a most fulfilling wine. Offers a smooth, textural glide with lively dark red fruits and lifted woody spices coming into play. Remains true to the Euphonium style with its elegance and its almost joyous delivery of herbs and spice: crushed sage and thyme, pepper and baking spices. The use of American and French oak, which delivers noteworthy tannin drive and grip, is also noted." - Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

94 points - "The 2022 release smells plummy and expressive with layers of spice, dried herbs, sage, bay leaf, blackberry pastille, tobacco leaf olive tapenade and earth. Some lovely nutty oak tones roll through on the palate, which shows wonderfully pure black fruits, fine, silty tannins and a vibrant line." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

    This Henschke Wine Never Disappoints

For the price and its origin, this wine is really good value for money and has been our go-to wine in this price range for many years. Drinking beautifully now but will really benefit from a few years in the cellar.

Keyneton Euphonium is a beautiful composition of shiraz from up to 50-year-old vines growing in the Eden and Barossa Valleys, blended with cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot from selected vineyards in both regions. The Barossa hills village of Keyneton, established by pastoralist Joseph Keynes in 1842, was a musical and cultural focus for the community, and home to the Henschke Family Brass Band and Henschke Winery. The band was founded in 1888 by second-generation Paul Gotthard Henschke and later led by third-generation Paul Alfred Henschke, featuring wonderful wind instruments such as a B flat euphonium, cornet and E flat clarinet. The B flat euphonium was produced by the famous Zimmermann factory in Leipzig, Germany, in the late 19th century. The instruments were imported by musical entrepreneur, Carl Engel of Adelaide in the late 1800s and have been lovingly restored to remain in the care of the Henschke family.
