Description

The 2023 Henschke Henry’s Seven is a tribute to the pioneering spirit of Henry Evans, who planted the first seven acres of vineyard at Keyneton in the Eden Valley back in 1853. This blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, and a touch of co-fermented Viognier is a testament to that history, capturing the elegance and complexity that the region is famous for.

This vintage shines with 81% Shiraz, bringing luscious dark fruits and structure, while 11% Grenache adds a juicy red-fruit lift, and 6% Mataro brings earthy, savoury notes. The 2% Viognier, co-fermented with the Shiraz, enhances the wine’s aromatics with floral and spice nuances. It’s matured in 100% seasoned French oak for eight months, letting the vibrant fruit character take centre stage without being overshadowed by heavy oak influence.

Bright and voluptuous, this wine is all about balance—rich in flavour yet smooth, with soft tannins and a long, luxurious finish. Perfect for drinking now, but with 15+ years of cellaring potential, it will reward those patient enough to let it age. For a wine that offers both history and modern winemaking finesse, the 2023 Henry’s Seven delivers exceptional value and a delicious glimpse into the heritage of the Barossa and Eden Valley regions.

"A smart, cohesive wine from a complex meld of components... A pretty nose gives lift to wild sage notes, in addition to calm berries. The palate is sharply drawn, with clean straight lines propelled by a strong acid seam, ensuring lively freshness to the flavours and finish... Supremely balanced and perfectly poised."

Always one of the most enjoyable and pleasing wines from the annual Henschke portfolio release. Well, it is for me from the time I tasted the earliest examples more years ago than I care to remember. A combination of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro with a smidgeon of the aromatic Viognier coming to play on the nose and then a little on the palate. It’s typically bright and spicy with plush smooth and supple medium-bodied fruit flavours. Juicy and delicious.

This is one heady mix of four Barossan grape varieties and two regions all rolled into one glorious, easy going, lightly savoury wine. Has Barossan friendliness written all over it. How about those gorgeous iridescent purple hues! I suspect the role of 2% Viognier co-fermented with 81 % Shiraz comes into play there. Their blending buddies are Grenache (11%) and Mataro (6%) with all grapes sourced from either the Barossa Valley or Eden Valley. The scent is similarly memorable, exhibiting an aromatic mix half way between English garden and Aussie bush with bramble, red and black cherry, grilled plum and spices aplenty. Oak is discreet. This is all about the fruit, layers of it, supported ably by lively spice, florals and a gentle savouriness. Drink 2024-2031.

A smart, cohesive wine from a complex meld of components: 81% Shiraz co-fermented with 2% Viognier, augmented by 11% Grenache and 6% Mataro. Most of this fruit is sourced from the Barossa Valley floor and 16% from Eden Valley. A pretty nose gives lift to wild sage notes, in addition to calm berries. The palate is sharply drawn, with clean straight lines propelled by a strong acid seam, ensuring lively freshness to the flavours and finish. Matured in 5% new oak for 10 months, it confidently enjoys its lean shape, aided by the grip of fine-grained tannins at the finish. Supremely balanced and perfectly poised.

A delicious blend. Spicy and flecked with black pepper, it shows a core of pure satsuma plum, black cherry and black berry fruits with hints of star anise, violets and roasting meats. Supple and fleshy and instantly appealing, finishing stony and savoury. Very moreish. Drink by 2032.

    Always Reliable

I've had several vintages of this wine over the years and it never ceases to impress. Medium bodied and a beautifully integrated blend of grapes makes it a wine to go with just about anything really. Pretty good value for the price, coming from this revered wine stable.

Delightful - would definitely order again.

This shiraz, grenache, mataro and viognier blend is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry’s death in 1868, his widow Sarah exercised her temperance convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all of the wine grapes. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early days of viticulture and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa.
