Description

The 2022 Hartford Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel is a stunningly powerful and unique wine, made from some of California's oldest Zinfandel vines.

Founded by Don and Jennifer Hartford in 1994, Hartford Family Winery is situated in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley, known for its challenging vineyard sites. Sourced from the century-old Hartford Vineyard on Wood Road, this Zinfandel benefits from low-yielding vines and well-drained sandy loam soils. The vineyard's organic and biodynamic practices enhance the wine's complexity.

These 100-year-old vines produce only a few clusters of intensely flavored grapes, resulting in a wine of remarkable depth and personality. Fermented with native yeast and aged for 10 months in 100% French oak (42% new), the 2022 vintage offers aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, and allspice. The palate reveals black cherry flavors balanced by fennel and dried herbs, finishing with a spicy cinnamon note. Well-integrated tannins provide structure and length.

A powerhouse Zin from this remarkable producer, and a must-try for collectors of California's finest reds.

"Don and Jennifer Hartford tend this head-trained vineyard in the backyard of their home. Planted over 100 years ago, the Hartford Vineyard’s vines are the lowest yielding of all of their Old Vine Zinfandel vineyards."

96 points - "Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Hartford Zinfandel soars with notes of rose oil, star anise, kirsch, and raspberry pie leading to a core of stewed red plums and incense. The medium to full-bodied palate has a refreshing backbone and lightly chewy texture, finishing with lovely purity and a red berry lift. Vineyard & Vintage Character

Hartford Family Winery proprietors Don and Jenny Hartford tend this 100+-year-old vineyard located on seven acres along Wood Road in the Russian River AVA of Sonoma County. The vineyard is head-pruned and produces low yields of about 1 ton / acre. Most vines produce only several clusters of intensely flavored grapes each year. Wood Road has well-drained, low fertility, sandy loam soils about two to three feet in depth over deeper layers of compacted sandy loam of about four to six inches. Since the Italian immigrants who planted the Wood Road Vineyard in the early 1900s wanted to ensure long vine life and moisture for their dry-farmed vines, they placed a blasting cap where each vine was to be planted and blasted through the compacted layer. Today we continue to enjoy the fruits of their ingenuity and celebrate the legacy of "dynamite" Zinfandels. The Hartford Vineyard has also been farmed using organic and biodynamic practices since 2004.
