Description

Glaetzer’s Amon-Ra is one of the Barossa’s most commanding Shiraz, a wine that doesn’t hold back yet still carries an effortless sense of balance. Sourced from some of the region’s oldest dry-grown vines - some over 130 years old - it’s a deep, brooding expression of Ebenezer Shiraz, packed with intensity and built to last.

Fermented in small open fermenters and hand-plunged daily, it then spends 16 months in 100% new oak (mostly French, with a touch of American) before being bottled unfiltered. The result is a wine of serious structure and concentration, with layer upon layer of dark fruit, spice, and savoury depth.

Powerful yet refined, Amon-Ra is made for the long haul. It’s compelling now, but patience will be well rewarded.

"I feel that Ben Glaetzer’s Amon-Ra is one of the flag bearers for contemporary Barossan Shiraz, certainly when it comes to the more powerful, weighty styles... There’s an imperious tannin structure, but the fruit just sucks it all up and charges on. One for the sybaritic indulger of Barossan wine. It’s a ripper."

"This is truly an iconic wine and a Barossa classic... This is simply stunning and will continue to thrill for the next fifteen to twenty years. There are plenty of more expensive flagship wines from this region that don’t hold a candle to this cracker."

96 points – "I feel that Ben Glaetzer’s Amon-Ra is one of the flag bearers for contemporary Barossan Shiraz, certainly when it comes to the more powerful, weighty styles. It has a sense of compression. Wildly concentrated black fruits and palate heft, yet it displays freshness and form; supple, lithe, and possessed of northern subregional power writ large. There’s an imperious tannin structure, but the fruit just sucks it all up and charges on. One for the sybaritic indulger of Barossan wine. It’s a ripper." – Dave Brooks (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "This is truly an iconic wine and a Barossa classic. Again, from the highly regarded Ebenezer sub-region, with the vines between fifty and 130 years of age. The yield is just a derisory two tonnes per hectare. Maturation was for sixteen months in new hogsheads, 95% French and the remainder American. Under cork. The colour here is black as a politician’s heart. There are cigar box notes, chocolate, blackberries, tobacco leaves, mocha, licorice, coffee beans and cold tea. This is supple, seamless and silky, with immaculately integrated oak, focus, serious length, impeccable balance and ideal structure. This is simply stunning and will continue to thrill for the next fifteen to twenty years. There are plenty of more expensive flagship wines from this region that don’t hold a candle to this cracker." - Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot)

Amon-Ra is an iconic wine that epitomises Ben Glaetzer’s passion to create wines that are full-flavoured, multi-layered and intense but still elegant, stylish and finely balanced.

Exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. Vine age 50—130 years old. Yield 2 tonnes per hectare.

The wine is fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters and hand plunged 3 times daily. Matured for 16 months in 100% new oak hogshead barrels (95% French and 5% American) and matured on lees to maintain fruit profile and animation. Bottled unfiltered to ensure minimal intervention with the wine’s natural characteristics.

In colour, the wine has an opaque purple core with an almost luminous quality at the rim. There are aromas of blackberry that is offset by hints of black pepper and cardamom. On the palate it is rich and delightful. A mix of power and delicacy. Dark fruit notes abound, counterpoised by elegant spice and herb notes. It is a wine that will develop beautiful with long term cellaring through to 2050.
