Description

Peter Graham’s Beechworth Shiraz is all about balance - structured yet approachable, detailed without being overworked. Grown on a south-facing ridge of the Domenica vineyard, the fruit was picked in small batches, fermented separately in concrete, and aged in French barriques (25% new) to add depth without overpowering the wine’s natural character.

Inspired by Northern Rhône Syrah, this is a cool-climate Shiraz with plenty of savoury appeal. The mild 2022 vintage meant a long, even ripening season, giving the wine bright fruit, fine tannins, and great natural acidity. It’s drinking well now but has the bones to develop beautifully over time.

With his hands-off approach and focus on vineyard expression, Peter continues to show why Domenica is one of Beechworth’s most exciting small producers. Classic, structured, and built to age, but with plenty to enjoy right now.

"Superlative aromas of mace, charcuterie, tapenade, and florals. The fruit—blue and savory—is really not the point. It is more about the lithe framework of structural attributes, from the precise acidity, sinuous tannins, and impeccably integrated whole bunches... Very fine Syrah."
- Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

"Refined and multi-layered aromas of granite and cumin are delivered over a strong base of black olive. Muscular, chewy and deeply savory in style, with wafts of aged meats and stone, its quite serious structure will see this wine sing for many years to come."

"This is very good. Plum, cherry, almond meal, a little spice, and liquorice root. It’s medium-bodied, tight and grainy in the tannin department...Raspberry, cherry, and earth, with a finish of excellent length. Top shelf."

97 points – "An address sitting pretty amidst the regional firmament, supported by an excellent 2022 Syrah. Superlative aromas of mace, charcuterie, tapenade, and florals. The fruit—blue and savory—is really not the point. It is more about the lithe framework of structural attributes, from the precise acidity, sinuous tannins, and impeccably integrated whole bunches. I'd be happy to breach this mid-weighter with an aggressive decant, or hold for greater complexity across the mid-term. Very fine Syrah." – Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

97 points - "The brooding, single-vineyard 2022 Shiraz Domenica Estate is a sleeper, but will offer plenty over the coming decades. Refined and multi-layered aromas of granite and cumin are delivered over a strong base of black olive. Muscular, chewy and deeply savory in style, with wafts of aged meats and stone, its quite serious structure will see this wine sing for many years to come." - Angus Hughson (Vinous)

94 points – "This is very good. Plum, cherry, almond meal, a little spice, and liquorice root. It’s medium-bodied, tight and grainy in the tannin department. The nutty signature is there, though it’s a little fresher and more vibrant than the 2021, and feels lighter on its feet and more lively. Raspberry, cherry, and earth, with a finish of excellent length. Top shelf." – Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Domenica Estate Shiraz is grown on a southern sloping ridge of our vineyard. 2022 was a cool growing season with a long ripening window, resulting in perfectly balanced fruit.

The small parcel was fermented in concrete before ageing in French barrique. The wine shows a remarkable level of detail in the flavour and aroma profile. It is powerful and has the structure to live for many years.

Domenica

Peter Graham is one of Beechworth's most thoughtful and talented winemakers. From his small plot of land on the Beechworth "Golden Mile", Pete crafts articulate and powerful wines with a gentle hand.

He farms his vineyard organically, though uncertified, with great care. The quality of fruit it yields is first class. In the winery, everything is moved via gravity. Patience is a virtue that Pete definitely possesses. No wine is released until it's 'ready'.

The Nebbiolo is one of the country's benchmarks. The Chardonnay is always in high demand given Pete's history as assistant winemaker at Giaconda. The Shiraz is the very model of modern Australian Shiraz; a wine with both power and refinement.

As Mike Bennie once noted:"If you’re into the new wave of truefine wine producers of Australia you should be onto, should get onto, Domenica. Classics in the making. Rising high."
