WINERY OF THE YEAR! - 2026 Halliday Wine Companion

Few Australian wines carry the reputation of Brokenwood’s Graveyard Shiraz. First bottled in the early 80s and drawn entirely from the single vineyard that sits opposite the winery in Pokolbin, it has long been considered the country’s benchmark for Hunter Shiraz and one of the true treasures of Australian wine.

The 2022 release reflects a cooler, wetter season in the Valley, and that personality comes through clearly. Rather than brute force, this vintage is all about finesse – coiled fruit, layers of spice and earth, and tannins that stretch out in a line that feels almost endless. Maturation was in fine French oak, these days kept to seasoned barrels to let the vineyard shine, and the result is a wine that is quietly powerful rather than showy.

This is a wine built for time. It’s already elegant and complex, but the real magic will come as it ages, gradually opening into something deeper, more layered and utterly unique to the Hunter. The Graveyard remains one of Australia’s most important wines, and the 2022 only strengthens that legacy.

This is an ultra-stylish, well-made Graveyard with tightly coiled fruit and a serious demeanour. In fact, it would be easy to miss its greatness, especially alongside riper styles, if one wasn't paying attention. Quiet and reserved with a youthful crimson hue, the fruit is tensioned within an intricate matrix of acidity and tannin. With aeration, one sees exotic black cherry characters nestled within a dense, sculpted, savoury palate. It's a slender, majestic shiraz that has grace and restrained power. It will be an extremely long-living wine, and I can't wait to see how it transforms with time. One for the future.

Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz no longer sees any new oak. It was once matured in a mix of both French and American oak, all new, but it no longer sees any American, and it’s now all one-year-old. We’re not talking neutral oak, it should be noted. One-year-old oak still imparts flavour. Second-fill oak though is like a cricket bat that’s been gently knocked in; it’s ready to go.

I’ve written about Graveyard and Brokenwood a few times over the years, none of which articles are especially good. I added new content and combined a couple of these articles into a new one recently: published – here – if you’re interested.

This is a pretty special wine. It feels distinctively Hunter but it’s the length of the finish that is the characteristic of note. It’s a gently stringy wine, and feels/tastes slightly reductive, and is infused with herbs, but in pure flavour terms this wine is defined by musk characters pushing into earth, spice and a pool of perfectly ripened cherry-plum. It’s in the wine’s tannin profile, so carefully crafted, where strings of herbs and earth feel dry and drawn out, that the light starts to really shine on this wine’s quality. Tannin pulls complex flavour with it, and sets out for a long distant line. 2022 was a cool, wet year in the Hunter. When you taste this wine, you do indeed sense the season, it’s not a “you’d never know” wine. It turns out, that’s a good thing.

Brokenwood

Brokenwood is one of the Hunter Valley’s great stories. What started back in 1970 as a weekend hobby for a couple of Sydney lawyers has grown into one of Australia’s most respected wineries, without ever losing that original sense of fun and adventure. From the beginning they set the standard for Hunter Semillon, a style they still lead the charge on today.

These days Chief Winemaker Stuart Hordern carries the torch, crafting brilliant Hunter classics and also drawing on fruit from some of the country’s best regions. Think plush McLaren Vale Shiraz, elegant Victorian Chardonnay, and powerful Beechworth Cabernet, all made with the same Brokenwood touch.

The Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz has long been one of Australia’s most collectable reds, but the wines across the range share a common thread: purity, balance and a real sense of place. At the same time, the team here has always kept things down-to-earth. They’re serious about sustainability and quality, but never take themselves too seriously.

Brokenwood has grown up, but it still carries the spark of those early days. If you want a producer that combines Hunter Valley history with a modern, generous spirit, you’ve found it.
