Description

The Brave Souls The Whaler Shiraz is a top-value Barossa bargain from the renowned Barossa winemaking duo of Corey Ryan & Simon Cowham (Sons of Eden) in collaboration with notable wine industry main-stay, David Fesq.

It's made from a blend of 75% Barossa Valley and 25% Eden Valley fruit. The Barossa Valley grapes, grown on the warm western ridge's heavy red soils, bring dense, dark red berry flavours. Meanwhile, the cooler Eden Valley vineyards in Moculta and Craneford add elegance and a bright, wild berry aromatic lift. It's just really one of the best value Barossa Shiraz we've seen in a while.

This Shiraz is hand-harvested and partly destemmed with a touch of whole bunch inclusion. The fruit undergoes extended fermentation with gentle tannin extraction from pumpovers and manual plunging. The wine was matured in a mix of new and seasoned oak hogsheads for 14 months, slowly adding a delicious toasted seasoning to the dark Barossan fruit as it builds complexity and depth before bottling.

It's a fresher and more vibrant modern expression of the region and one dripping in regional character and easy drinking appeal. It has all the silky tannin and hearty, ripe, blue-fruited deliciousness you could want for the very reasonable price asked. A gorgeous, sumptuous version of Shiraz from this part of the world.

95 points
"Here's a juicy, purpley-splashed little wine with a thick swell of beautifully ripe plum, blueberry and boysenberry fruits. It sports some gorgeous floral tones – I'm thinking jasmine, citrus blossom and dragonfruit flowers – along with notes of blueberry pie, ironstone, a touch of pepper and charcuterie. It's pretty as a picture and a great role model for contemporary Barossa shiraz at a super-sharp price. Great joyful, bouncy drinking."

Sourced from two different regions within the Barossa, this wine is a blend of Barossa Valley 75% and Eden Valley 25%. The Barossa Valley vineyard is situated on the heavy red soils of the warm western ridge. Grapes from the cooler Eden Valley are sourced from two vineyards situated at either end of the valley, in Moculta and Craneford.

The blend of unique Barossa vineyards provides a complex array of flavors, with the Barossa Valley component providing fleshy dark red berry fruit characters and density, while the Eden Valley component contributes elegance and bright wild berry fruited aromatic lift.

Winemaking

Hand harvested, the fruit was fully destemmed, apart from a small percentage of whole bunch inclusion, and chilled within the fermenter to ensure an extended fermentation period. A variety of fermentation techniques were utilized across a number of small fermenters ranging in size from 1t to 3t. All involved extended skin contact ranging from 12 to 20 days with gentle extraction of tannins from a combination of pump overs and manual plunging. After the initial cooling period, some ferments were left to ferment dry naturally while others were inoculated with cultured yeast. Upon completion, the ferments were pressed to a mix of new and seasoned oak hogsheads for malolactic fermentation and maturation. Matured in barrel with minimal intervention for 14 months prior to bottling. The diversity of fermentation techniques, together with the vineyard selection, assist in building complexity and layers of flavor within the blended wine.

Tasting Notes

Deep in color with a rich and lifted bouquet of wild berry fruits. On the palate, a combination of ripe red fruits and wild berry characters are complimented with subtle dried herb and spicy notes. Silky tannins persist across the length of the palate.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
