Description

This stunning Barossa Shiraz combines some very potent and respected vineyards - namely the iconic Hoffmann Dallwitz block, the Dimchurch Home Old vineyard and Asbroek's Old Vine vineyard in Kalimna.

It's a fascinating wine, finding detail power and and gamey-ness from these ancient vineyard sources. Young Callum Powell has nailed this release.

The control of tannin and precision in picking times of these distinct parcels makes for an exciting, idiosyncratic and perfectly cellar-worthy expression of this great Shiraz-producing region.

"This is quite potent but still manages a sense of freshness and prettiness. Scents of ripe plum, ginger biscuit, cumin and cardamom in a big way, bloody meat, black tea, new leather and anise. Evocative... the beating heart of Barossa is is writ large. Tremendous."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

"Contemporary Claret vibes here with an appealing, harmonious path across the palate, fine tannins and some nice high-toned lift."
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "A blend of three shiraz blocks in the Barossa and Eden Valley: Hoffmann Dallwitz Old, Hoffmann Dallwitz 1996 and Hutton Vale 1961. There's depth and opulence here, but not at the expense of detail and a sense of freshness across the wine's form. Blackberry, Doris plum, black cherry clafoutis with hints of rose petals, sage, mace, herb-crusted roast meats, ginger cake, tapenade and earth. Contemporary Claret vibes here with an appealing, harmonious path across the palate, fine tannins and some nice high-toned lift." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "This is quite potent but still manages a sense of freshness and prettiness. Scents of ripe plum, ginger biscuit, cumin and cardamom in a big way, bloody meat, black tea, new leather and anise. Evocative. The palate shows off rich, dense fruit characters, intense black plum, cola, more gingery notes, that similar riff of curry spices, strong black tea feel to the fine but firm tannin profile and some bergamot and bay leaf to finish. Feels quite Italianate in a way – an almost robust sangiovese-esque profile, and good for it. But still, the beating heart of Barossa is is writ large. Tremendous." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Agricola

Agricola Vintners, led by Callum Powell, marks a new chapter in the Powell family's history in the Barossa Valley. After working alongside his father, Dave Powell of Torbreck, Callum now creates his own legacy, sourcing fruit from family vineyards and renowned sites like Hoffmann.

Callum’s winemaking journey started in childhood and includes valuable experiences in the Rhône Valley with Jean-Louis Chave. This background instills a deep respect for terroir in his work in Barossa and Eden Valleys.

At Agricola Vintners, Callum focuses on Shiraz, using minimal intervention to let the fruit shine. His wines blend grapes from exceptional vineyards, resulting in complex, vibrant flavors without heavy oak influence.

Callum employs 100% whole bunch fermentation and natural processes, maturing wines on gross lees for 12 months. This approach produces bright, expressive wines that capture the essence of the Barossa with a fresh perspective.
