Description

Tyrrell's just do things right, and Shiraz is one of the things they've been getting right for over 160 years - after all, it is one of the first varieties Edward Tyrrell planted back in 1858.

The Vat 9 Shiraz, sourced from the old vines of the Ashmans vineyard, is deep and soulful, full of power, tannin and dark-fruited concentration.

Only very small amounts are released of this profound wine, so make sure you grab some Australian wine history.

"The wine overflows with lively, spicy fruits that dance in the mouth as the oak joins in the savoury core, reflecting the maturation in 'mostly newer' oak for the usual 14 months. There also appears to be some whole bunches involved."
- James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

"I can’t imagine anyone not liking this wine (well, I can, though there’s likely no help I can offer them)."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 points - "Created in 1962 by the late Murray Tyrrell, and I had became well aware of it by the mid-1960s as my weekend trips to the Hunter became more frequent. The fruit for Vat 9 is hand picked from the best parcels off ancient red clay soils over limestone with a minimum age of 50 years. The wine overflows with lively, spicy fruits that dance in the mouth as the oak joins in the savoury core, reflecting the maturation in 'mostly newer' oak for the usual 14 months. There also appears to be some whole bunches involved." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "A juicy and fruity shiraz with plums, ripe strawberries and undertones of sliced red meat, terra cotta and orange peel. Medium to full body, creamy tannins and a savory finish. Lovely intensity of fruit and focus." James Suckling

94 Points - "Ripe raspberry, baking spice, a little creamy, mixed berries, acidity is clean, tannin a little sticky, but lovely flavour and a good finish. Very nice. Has the plushness that Vat 9 delivers so well. I can’t imagine anyone not liking this wine (well, I can, though there’s likely no help I can offer them)." | Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The grapes for our Vat 9 Shiraz are sourced from the oldest and best blocks on our Ashmans property, with the oldest vines dating back to 1892. All of these blocks sit on a strip of red soil that runs through the winery, soil that’s ideal for growing super-premium Shiraz.

Handpicked and sorted in the vineyard, the grapes from the different blocks were all kept separate during fermentation. Some whole bunches were included in the ferment and most of the fruit was destemmed but not crushed, ensuring as many whole berries as possible were in the fermenter. Following fermentation, the individual wines were matured in new and one-year-old French-oak casks until the Vat 9 blend was carefully assembled. The wine was then returned to the same casks for further maturation. No finings were used.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.
