Description

The Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet is a Hunter Valley classic that has pride of place in many great cellars across the country.

It marries Shiraz and Cabernet from some of the family's finest vineyards into a richer, darker expression of the region.

It's aged in smaller (225L) barrels and built to mature gracefully in the cellar.

This is a uniquely Australian blend from one of the most historic and iconic winemaking families in the country. A safer bet for the cellar, you'll hardly see from the Hunter Valley.

"A blend of Hunter Shiraz 60% and McLaren Vale Cabernet. Kind of a curio in the Tyrrell’s portfolio, though one with history and pedigree. I think the Hunter Valley and McLaren Vale sing well together, as an aside. Rich, black fruit, black olive, a bit of liquorice and aniseed. Medium to full-bodied, ripe with red and black fruit, a smooth ride of deep flavour, and a slightly earthy character, the tannin really fine and massed on a long finish. Impressive."

In 2021, we decided to go back to our historic roots and make Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet as a multi-regional blend. The Shiraz is sourced from some of the best parcels on the Tyrrell’s Estate ‘Ashmans’ property, with the Cabernet Sauvignon coming from McLaren Vale. The 2021 vintage blend is 60% Shiraz and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon..

The autumn and winter months of 2020 saw the worst drought in a generation be broken with substantial rainfall, we led into an outstanding growing season for the 2021 vintage. A cool summer then gave us even, stress-free ripening with some heat around Australia Day that was perfectly timed at the final stages of ripening. With an early budburst and later than normal harvesting, the fruit had a longer than normal hang time, which meant that all of the fruit had wonderful flavours balanced by a high natural acidity. After fermentation in stainless steel vats, both parcels were matured separately before blending in November 2021. The blended wine then finished its maturation in French oak barriques until bottling in April 2022.

A modern interpretation of the Great Australian Red that respects the tradition of varietal blending to make a more rounded wine. The wine shows intense plum fruit sweetness from the Shiraz with dark berry and chocolate characters. The Cabernet component adds to the density and structure of the wine.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.
