Description

This is a name you perhaps don't know but these Stonehaven wines seriously impressed us for their polished nature and their outstanding value - particularly this Limited Release Shiraz.

Coming from the heart of Wrattonbully, one of the Limestone Coast’s quiet achievers, this 96-point beauty is a rich yet modern take on Aussie Shiraz.

It's classic SA Shiraz with bold, juicy flavours—blackberries, plums, and a crack of peppery spice—woven through with subtle oak that brings everything together. It’s got a lovely silky texture and balanced tannins that keep it smooth and drinkable, but with enough structure to make it really sing.

For $25, you’re getting serious quality—this wine easily punches well above its weight. It's the perfect mid-week high-quality quaffer.

"Small-batch vinification with prefermentation maceration, extended skin contact and barrel fermentation might have been an exercise in winemaking prowess, but in fact is more than that, the quality also reflecting an excellent vintage. The tannin structure is exemplary, fruit welded to a long palate."

This Shiraz is an intense fruit driven wine with abundant juicy, red fruit flavours and a rich round palate. Lingering dark fruits, pepper spice and subtle oak complete this wine for balanced and impressive finish.

Stonehaven Wines

Stonehaven Winery has had an interesting journey. Originally built by Hardys in 1998 for a cool $33 million, it was all about showcasing the potential of South Australia's Limestone Coast. This is a region with some pretty diverse sub-regions, including Coonawarra, Padthaway, and Wrattonbully. While Coonawarra’s fame is well-established, the other subregions were still coming into their own when Stonehaven was launched.

However, after some big corporate shake-ups, the brand was sold, and Stonehaven was left dormant for years. That was until early 2021 when CW Wines, a South Australian family business, snapped it up and breathed new life into it. They didn’t just relaunch the brand—they overhauled it with a fresh look and started producing wines that are seriously good value. Under the guidance of winemaker Ben Wurst, they’ve created everything from easy-drinking varietals to more serious, limited-release bottles, with a focus on quality and showcasing the region's cool-climate styles.

Stonehaven’s focus remains on the Limestone Coast’s unique terroirs, with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay being the stars, along with some emerging varieties like Merlot and Riesling. It’s a real comeback story for a winery that’s proving it still has plenty to offer.
