Description

Steve Pannell's love for Nebbiolo stretches back to his days in the famed hills of Barolo.

He's always been an advocate for the idea that we should grow the right grapes in the right place and with development of the Protero label, he's putting that plan down on paper.

He's been working with the fruit from the Baldasso vineyard in the Adelaide Hills since 2005. After taking over a lease on this site in 2019, he quickly replanted it to more suitable varieties for the area, save for the Nebbiolo, which has been in the ground since 1999 which was left untouched.

Now he's crafting this wine as a Nebbiolo that is up for immediate enjoyment - no need to cellar, this is ready to roll.

93 Points - "A wine crafted in a beautiful fashion, espousing fruit while forfeiting none of the structural spindle and vitality that makes nebbiolo compact, savoury and so delicious. Satsuma and damson plum, red cherry and dried thyme segue to a burst of rosewater across the mid-palate before the pull of sinew and clatter of tannic bone, the signature of variety and style." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 Points - "Medium-full red with a good tint of purple; the wine is medium bodied and firm with a good spine of tight tannins—very nebbiolo—the bouquet raspberry, redcurrant, aniseed/spice and subtly earthy, with hints of graphite and rusty iron. The tannins are fine and balanced yet assertive, and will help it go superbly with protein-rich foods. Lovely wine and typical of the grape." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

    Acidic and bitter

Really didn’t like this one, tried three different bottles, used the breathing device, just tasted rough and tart.

    Charming mini-Barolo

A good take on Nebbiolo, not the most pliable of varieties to work with outside Piemonte. Dark cherries, smokey tea leaves, a hint of amaro and porcini. A medium weight palate, more depth to it than initially shows, taut tannin as per the variety and style. Steve Pannell’s a fine winemaker, although i sometimes wonder if he spreads his talents a bit too far.

    A wonderful introduction to nebbiolo

Steve Pannell never disappoints and at this modest price, the Protero nebbiolo gives the novice a wonderful chance to appreciate the many delights of this variety. Mid-weight at best, it is fine alternative to those pinot noir lovers looking some for something similar, but different. I bought 6 bottles about a month ago, and 3 have already disappeared.

“The greatest wines I have ever tried have been difficult to describe, it’s as though words aren’t enough.” - SCP
Protero’s Nebbiolo represents Stephen’s understanding of tannin, a paradigm which drives all his red-winemaking decisions.

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate. They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!
