About The Wine

Charlie Seppelt and Skye Salter had both previously worked with the Shiraz grown on the ‘Springs Hill Vineyard’ in Blewitt Springs.

When the time came to source some fruit for their own label, they approached the Whaite family to see if they could secure some fruit. A small parcel was brought to their winery, a small amount of whole bunch used, and an even smaller amount of new oak.

They have perfectly captured the blue fruits and spice that leap from the glass from Shiraz grown in the sandy Blewitt Springs soils. Effortlessly drinkable.

About Paralian

Paralian is a family-based South Australia outfit, founded by Charlie Seppelt and Skye Salter.

After a combined 46 vintages both in Australia and broad, the two decided to dial their lives and professional careers into the place they both fell in love with, McLaren Vale. It's the spot that has the three things they care about: special sites, surf and sand.

They have great long-standing relationships with some of the region's top growers from their previous roles working at blue chip wineries. Those friendships are now giving them access to some phenomenal fruit.  It's the perfect foundation for them build their small artisan brand.

Just a couple of vintages in and the critical reviews have been huge. Paralian is one of the budding wine projects to watch in McLaren Vale.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Single Vineyard Shiraz, fruit sourced from ‘Springs Hill Vineyard’, Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale grown by the Whaite family.

Hand-picked fruit, wild-fermented in a 133-year-old wax lined concrete open fermenter, 22% whole bunch (foot trodden for tannin extraction from ripe rachis), remainder destemmed. Cold soaked for 5 days, plunged and pumped over during peak of ferment, 11 days on skins. Wine was matured on lees for 10 months in French oak, 20% new.

Spicy, deep, dense and dark to black primary fruits, Kalamata tapenade and white spice intermingle with coal dust, graphite and charcuterie notes. Richly scented, medium to full bodied with a dense ripe core of coiled tannins, a coolness to the fruits through the palate with richness that McLaren Vale delivers with little effort. The fine spice notes throughout this wine giving it freshness and a style befitting of where it’s grown.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Spicy black fruit, choc-hazelnut, grilled meat and black olive. It’s medium-bodied, quite purple to taste, all the spice and meaty flavours, though not without some floral and thyme perfume. Tannin is supple and offers a sort of graphite grip, and again the dried herb and meaty flavours carry on a long finish of freshness and intensity. Savoury, spicy, a very ‘adult’ style of Shiraz here, and really quite distinctive and good." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The Real Review

"Super-concentrated purple colour that coats the glass. The aromas are very spicy and detailed, with floral nuances and a lovely aromaticity. Fresh and clean: blackberry and cranberry. An essency, hyper-concentrated shiraz that is nevertheless smooth, supple and succulent, with lashings of tannins that surprisingly don't get in the way of early enjoyment. Long, long carry. Extreme sport." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Hand picked in the early morning. A meld of whole berries and bunches (22%), layered, cold soaked and plunged, before foot stomping and 10 months in French hogsheads and puncheons. An exceptional nose of crushed pepper, dill, clove and a 'je ne sais quoi' peaty wildness reminiscent of Cornas. Long and taut, shimmering with licorice, blue fruits, dried nori accents and the spice elements as they reverberate across the dense, tightly packed palate. Plenty floral, too. This is an exceptional Blewitt Springs wine. A very rare occasion when shiraz trumps grenache." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

Top 100 Wines of 2022 - "22% whole bunch foot-trod, the remainder destemmed whole berry, chilled five-day cold soak, 11 days on skins, 10% juice run off, 11 months maturation in French oak. A resplendent palate, pulsating with essence of blackberries, dark chocolate, licorice, ripe tannins and sweet earth." - James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)
