Description

An ode to the founding father of the winery, stonemason and wheelwright Johann Christian Henschke, this Shiraz comes off a vineyard planted in 1968 by his great-grandson Cyril.

This is very much an Eden Valley Shiraz, on the lighter side of full-bodied, its full of dark berries, brambles, spice and so much more. Dark and inky in the glass, it’s a wine that takes time to both open and fully explore its depth and layers.

In its youth this isn’t a wine to tackle and mess about with unless you have some rich protein to help cut through its dense structure. Rather, like so many great wines from Henschke, have patience and thou shall be rewarded.

"The wine is very full in the mouth with impressive concentration and a voluminous core of fruit sweetness allied to abundant tannins of a velvety suppleness. Gorgeous shiraz."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

"And this wine will age. But a final word about the aromatics which deserve special mention. With time in the glass, they simply bring a new layer of interest, a new level of enjoyment."
- Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

"I really like the flow of fruit in the Wheelwright this year; plush yet graceful with fine, compact tannins providing ample structure for cellaring."
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is ultimately a spicy, red-fruited expression. There are notes of raspberry seed, shades of nori, blood and gore. It is fresh and beautiful and slinky, in its way."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

96 points - "Very deep, saturated colour with strong purple tints; there are intense sage and raspberry/mulberry aromas while the palate is wonderfully deep and plush with masses of fruit flavours and those dried herb nuances embrace oregano, thyme, sage and more. The wine is very full in the mouth with impressive concentration and a voluminous core of fruit sweetness allied to abundant tannins of a velvety suppleness. Gorgeous shiraz. (Vines planted by Cyril Henschke in 1968 on the Henschke centenary)" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "The late Cyril Henschke was a strong believer in the quality of Eden Valley Shiraz. The vines he planted in 1968 are now officially designated “old vines” and they contribute some old vine magic – in league with a top vintage year – to deliver a quality wine. Deep red purple in colour. Aromas are lifted, beguilingly aromatic, in violet, black cherry, plum and cassis, dried herbs and spice. It’s a smooth transition to the palate where spices dwell with berries, dark chocolate, anise, sage and earth, all beautifully framed in fine-grained tannins. Oak comes with a higher level of French oak than the previous release – 82% French and 18% American – and helps define the wine and yet is so integrated, even at this early stage. It’s a good sign, for good, natural balance now will equally assure the early drinker, as well as those who like their Shiraz with bottle age. And this wine will age. But a final word about the aromatics which deserve special mention. With time in the glass, they simply bring a new layer of interest, a new level of enjoyment." - Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "100% organic/biodynamically farmed shiraz from the Wheelwright vineyard in the Eden Valley, planted by Cyril Henschke in the 1960s. Deep crimson with plush satsuma plum, black cherry and blackcurrant fruits underscored with hints of fine spice, sage, coal dust, cedar, violets, dark chocolate and crushed stone. I really like the flow of fruit in the Wheelwright this year; plush yet graceful with fine, compact tannins providing ample structure for cellaring." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "The 2021 The Wheelwright Single Vineyard Shiraz is succulent and chalky, with dried herb and crushed rocks, blackberry, mulberry and a hint of pastrami. The fruit was grown at an elevation of 500 meters, and the vines are planted in a contour, mostly north facing. This is ultimately a spicy, red-fruited expression. There are notes of raspberry seed, shades of nori, blood and gore. It is fresh and beautiful and slinky, in its way. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
