Description

Nebbiolo has long been a quiet strength at Denton, and the 2021 release is a standout - both for the season and for the winemaker behind it. This was Luke Lambert’s final Nebbiolo under the Denton label, and it shows the sort of calm confidence that comes from deep familiarity with a site.

The fruit was sourced from Block 2A, midway up the northwest-facing slope, where it gets plenty of sun and the long, steady ripening the variety demands. It was wild fermented with no temperature control, spending 12 days on skins with daily plunging and foot stomping, then pressed to large-format French oak (20% new). The wine was left unsulphured in barrel for 18 months before bottling - unfined, unfiltered, and unforced.

Denton’s granitic soils and Luke’s hands-off approach make a perfect match here. This is pure, structured, detail-driven Nebbiolo that speaks clearly of place, made by someone who truly understood it.

"A bright, medium garnet. Perfumed and poised on the nose with its bouquet of morello cherries, red plums, dried flowers, tobacco and orange zest. Even better on the medium-bodied and very persistent palate. Textured and long-finishing with very fine, polished tannins. Bravissimo!"

    Cracking Nebbiolo from the master

Terrific example of the variety, from the master himself, Luke Lambert. Drinking beautifully now, or cellar for another 5 or so years. Cheers lads👌

Nebbiolo is kinda Denton’s thing. Eight of their 80 acres are planted to six different clones of Nebbiolo, with plans for expansion in the works. The Nebbiolo block sits halfway up the northwestern slope on Block 2A, catching all available sunshine and ensuring a long, slow ripening period–essential to achieve full phenological ripeness in this variety. The fruit was destemmed, wild yeast fermented and held on skins for 12 days with frequent plunging and foot stomping. There was no temperature control. The wine was then pressed to 500-litre French oak puncheons (20% new) and left unsulphured for 18 months before bottling without fining or filtration.
