Description

The Cirillo Single Vineyard Mataro is a nod to Barossa's rich history and the region's old Mataro clones. Winemaker Marco Cirillo propagated vines from his 1850 Grenache vineyard, replanting them as a bush vineyard in 2005.

This small block yields just 60 dozen bottles each year. Naturally made in open fermenters and gently basket pressed, the wine matures in seasoned French oak barrels for 12 months, showcasing its true terroir.

In the glass, expect a generous, silky wine with deep, structured flavors and fine tannins. Notes of dark, resinous fruit, earthy spice, and a hint of oak create a full-bodied yet impeccably balanced profile.

The 2021 Cirillo Mataro is rare and fascinating, offering a vibrant, savory experience that's perfect for immediate enjoyment or aging over the next 10 to 20 years.

93 points, "The only wine at this address that goes solely into two hogsheads. Merely because there is so little of it! Deep, dark and resinous, with a ferruginous burr manifest as something sooty, molten, meaty and carnal. Irrefutably full-weighted, yet nothing jammy. But the overall impression is one of impeccable ripeness, vibrancy and relatively smooth contours for the variety, with a gentle rasp of oak tannin at the back end. Drink or hold." - James Suckling

Delicious! ... buy a few and keep till next winter if you can.

The Cirillo Mataro is an ode to Barossa history and old clones of the region. Cuttings were taken from nine individual rouge Mataro vines amongst our 1850 Grenache vineyard. Marco Cirillo propagated these nine vines in a nursery at the winery. Then he replanted these in 2005, as bush vineyard (no trellising) on the Cirillo property. As it is a small block, it only equates to around 60 dozen made each year.

This wine is generous and silky with beautiful depth. It shows structured flavour with fine tannins. Made naturally in open fermenters, gently basket pressed, then left to mature in seasoned French oak barrels for 12 months. This allows the Mataro to show its true terroir. A wine that can be forgotten in the cellar for the next 10 to 20 years.

Cirillo

Marco Cirillo is Barossan to the core. His family lays claim to the world’s oldest continuously producing Grenache vines, the most ancient of them dating back to 1850. This is an incredible achievement from the Cirillos and those vignerons who have tended to these vines for over 160 years.

Marco's range of wines made primarily from Grenache and Shiraz screams quality at every level, with old vine concentration paired with the modern brightness of fruit. Considering the incredible history in every bottle, they provide incredible value for the money also - the Vincent Grenache is one of the best $25ish wines in the country. One of our favourite Barossa producers.
