Description

The 2021 GR/M is Brash Higgins’ take on the classic Grenache-Mataro duo, and it’s a beauty. Crafted from biodynamically grown grapes sourced from the distinctive sandy soils of Blewitt Springs, this blend is a celebration of McLaren Vale’s fresher side, with that signature Brash punch.

Grenache makes up 70% of the blend, bringing those juicy red berry tones, while the Mataro (30%) adds structure, savoury spice, and a hint of dusty earthiness. The two varieties were handpicked together from Yangarra Estate, co-fermented wild for seamless integration, and then aged for 15 months in seasoned French puncheons to bring everything into balance.

Plush yet structured, it’s got that irresistible mix of soft texture and silty tannins that keeps you sipping. There’s a brightness to the finish—almost an amaro-like twist—that leaves you wanting more.

It’s a mid-weight, everyday drinker that’s just complex enough to make you pause and appreciate each sip. Whether you’re after something with a bit of polish or just a wine to share with mates, this GR/M has got you covered.

“Lots of cherry, sarsaparilla, aniseed, coffee beans, dark chocolate, mint and cinnamon going on. Soft textured with a haze of silty tannin lending some shape, a bright, amaro-like pleasingly bitter finish also a feature. Between hello and goodbye, a sense of ripeness but good balance, plush, medium weight and a well-hewn mesh of the two varieties. Lovely stuff all up.”

92 points - "A mid to gently fuller weighted wine, quintessentially easy drinking while mercifully eclipsing the ‘chilled red’ category. An arid swathe of polished leather tannins compress strawberry coulis, root spice, dried thyme, anise and just a lick of menthol. Mataro’s ferrous dustiness, a welcome balancing act. This is a delicious wine, sitting on the precipice of something serious and an everyday swigger. It works either way. From biodynamically grown grapes.” Ned Goodwin, MW (JamesSuckling.com)

Two parcels of Grenache and Mataro from a Biodynamically farmed site at Yangarra Estate in the distinctive sandy soils of Blewitt Springs along the upper ridges of the eastern flank of McLaren Vale nearing the Adelaide Hills. The fruit was hand-picked on the same day, destemmed at the winery and co-fermented using wild yeast in an open fermenter for 2 weeks. The 2020 vintage was a warm one, but low yielding, and overall excellent quality. Yangarra’s vineyard sits in the cooler Upper Sands part of Blewitt Springs. 15 months in trusty French puncheons further forged the fine red berry tones of Grenache (70%) with the savoury spice of Mataro (30%).

Brash Higgins

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking American-turned-honorary-Aussie, Brad Hickey.

In his former life, Hickey was one of America's top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York's finest wine lists. He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.

Hickey's wines are extremely expressive. They fall in two camps - the wines sourced from Omensetter vineyard and those sourced from friends around the Vale and the warm, dry Riverlands.
