Description

Refosco might just be the perfect picnic red.

As we explore more and more varieties that are better suited to our climate and lifestyle, varieties like Refosco are finding plenty of fans. They offer huge appeal in the easy-drinking, don't-think-too-hard wines category. It's all violets and brambly spice, like a walk through a forest, and supremely savoury.

Refosco doesn't mind a chill, and it doesn't require fancy stemware, it's a red made for knocking back in good company.

Fold out the deck chairs and get stuck into it!

93 Points - "De-stemmed, open ferment in tubs, mix of inoculated and wild yeasts, matured in Flexcube for 8 months on lees. The Northern Italian grape variety lives up to its peppery personality reputation, with lifted pink peppercorn, briar, spice and violet aromatics joining ripe black fruits in a wine that is just so drinkable and approachable. Lovely texture with the use of Flexcube allowing the fruit full sway. Supple with savoury tannins to close." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 Points - "Well this is something. It’s both floral and alive with woodsy/exotic spice and while light-ish it’s well-enough (red) fruited to keep everyone happy. What I particularly like about this wine is its length; the trail of spice and gun smoke-like flavours out through the finish is as significant as it is alluring. Basically it’s just a gorgeous red wine to drink." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Refosco is a relatively rare variety in Australia that originates from Friuli in North East Italy. It is naturally very high in the compound rotundone, which is responsible for the pepper character in red wines. It is a high acid, late ripening variety that tends to produce lighter bodied wines with lovely perfume.
Hand picked then gently destemmed direct to open tubs then cold soaked for 3 days. They were then allowed to warm and one parcel was inoculated with selected red wine yeast while the other was left for fermentation to occur using wild yeasts. The ferments were gently plunged twice daily and pressed out after sugar dryness. Parcels were filled to Flexcube and matured on lees for 8 months prior to blending, crossflow filtration and bottling.
