Description

Best's Great Western is one of the country's oldest wineries, but they continue to innovate and evolve.

Their Bin 1 Shiraz is the ultimate introduction to their famous style. Not sure whether the term 'introduction' befits a previous Jimmy Watson winner, but that just goes to demonstrate the value available here.

There aren't many better and more qualified Shiraz on the market than the Best's Bin 1 - class and value both high in this release.

"Black pepper and peppercorn characters float through cherry and plum fruit. Lively with depth and fine-grained, savoury tannins. A charming release for fans of the Great Western style. Drink by 2033."
- Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Cool-climate expression with mace, clove, blue fruits, olive, and umami warmth. Tannins and acidity offer tension, with a menthol-dried finish. A wine of immense personality and soul. Drink or hold."
- Ned Goodwin (James Suckling)

"Peppery and complex with spicy, dried-herb notes and grape stem influence. Medium-full bodied with chewy texture and earthy tannins. An elegant Shiraz with good potential and value."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review, December 2023)

94 points - "This release is on song. Black pepper and peppercorn characters float through cherry and plum fruit flavour. It's lively, it has enough depth, it finishes well and it charms throughout. The fine-grained, savoury aspect of the tannin here is of particular note. If you like the Great Western style, you can buy this with confidence. Drink by 2033." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "This is good. A cooler climatic expression that remains distinctly Australian, rather than playing the reductive hand of an ersatz Rhone. An exceptional nose of mace, clove, blue fruits, olive and briar, backed by a wave of beef bouillon and iodine-umami warmth. The tannins, a clatter across the middle, with a bow of dutiful acidity drawn to just the right degree of tension. Some scrubby menthol dries the finish ever so slightly. This said, this is a delicious wine of immense personality and soul. Drink or hold." - Ned Goodwin (James Suckling)

91 points - "Medium-full red with just a faint tint of purple remaining, the bouquet peppery, bunchy and quite complex, spicy and dried-herby, with a definite influence of grape stems. Medium-full bodied with a gently chewy texture, and earthy tannins close out the finish. Good potential and value. An elegant shiraz." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review, December 2023)

    Best's is the best

Always reliable - nice great big Victorian shiraz, great recommendation from DD.

Best's Bin No. 1 Shiraz is the wine that gives people their first taste of our style of Great Western Shiraz. Made from Best’s own vineyards as well as trusted local growers, this wine is meticulously crafted with the same attention to detail as the flagship wines. Bin No. 1 Shiraz represents the essence of Best’s Great Western’s winemaking ideals and the distinction of the Great Western region.

HOW DOES IT TASTE?

Medium bodied with primary red fruits of red plum skin and cherry whilst the mid-palate has a lovely layer of pepper spice. The wine finishes with fine toasty tannins coupled with linear acidity that allows the wine to finish fresh and in perfect balance.
This vibrant wine is great to enjoy now with food but will soften and gain complexity over the next 5-12 years. Ideal to drink Greek style slow roasted lamb.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS:

Bin 1 Shiraz represents the essence of Best’s winemaking ideals and the uniqueness of the Great Western region.

Best's Great Western

Best's Great Western is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the country.

Their iconic Nursery Block is home to some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties that can be found anywhere in the world. Established in the late 1860s, this precious vineyard is envied by much of the wine growing world.

Their wines are consistently excellent: the Shiraz dark and powerful, the Rieslings full flavoured and impeccably balanced, and the rare releases of Old Vine Meunier and Thomson Family Shiraz are some of the most collectable red wines in the country.

The Thomson family, and the Best family before them, have given us one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.
