Description

The 2021 vintage marked a new chapter for Bass Phillip – the first wines made entirely under new ownership, with Burgundy’s Jean-Marie Fourrier and the team now guiding one of Australia’s most revered Pinot estates. While the philosophy remains true to Phillip Jones’ original vision of purity, texture and site transparency, there’s a touch more polish and precision in the details.

Fruit for the Reserve still comes from the original 1979 Leongatha plantings, cropped at extremely low yields and farmed biodynamically. The 2021 season was cool and even, allowing for slow ripening and incredible fruit definition. The winemaking is gentle and exacting – wild fermentation, minimal intervention, and maturation in fine French oak selected for subtlety, not show.

The result is an outstanding continuation of the Bass Phillip legacy. Perfumed with red cherry, rose petal and spice, the palate flows with effortless power and fine-grained tannins. It’s layered, graceful and deeply persistent, carrying both the weight of history and the precision of a new era.

Deep-ish ruby with good purple rim and a discreetly foresty, complex bouquet enshrining dried herbs, forest underbrush, some earthy savoury notes. There's dark cherry to plum with hints of fivespice similar to the Premium bottling. The palate is deep and well structured, concentrated and driving. The tannins are insistent and firm, well balanced with the weight and power of the fruit. A majestic wine that will blossom if given more time in bottle. Tremendous length, a lovely deep-set core of sweet fruit, and a satisfyingly climactic finish.

If you are labelled 'Reserve', there’s a reputation to live up to and, as it turns out, this is the nirvana of the suite of BP pinot noirs. As complex, as detailed and as precise as you can get. Heady forest floor aromas, the fragrance of this vineyard, dark fruit, black tea, Middle Eastern spices and star anise with a dusting of cocoa. It keeps giving. The full-bodied palate is superbly textured and coated in ripe, velvety tannins, cedary oak and refreshing acidity. Of course, this is just starting out on its journey, lucky those who can watch this mature. I tip my hat to legendary winemaker John Durham, who came in a few years ago to help Philip Jones finish his last vintage. But the global pandemic and subsequent lockdowns and lockouts meant he has been much more than a caretaker since. John has cared for and nurtured these vines and wines as if they were his own. Bravo.

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
