Description

Bass Phillip’s Gamay might fly under the radar next to its famous Pinots, but it’s quietly become one of the most distinctive wines in the range. Made from a small block at the Leongatha estate, it reflects the same meticulous vineyard work – low yields, organic farming, and a gentle hand in the winery.

2021 was a cool, balanced vintage in South Gippsland, and that calm season shows in the wine. The fruit was hand-picked, fermented with wild yeast, and matured in old French oak to keep the focus on freshness and texture rather than oak flavour.

It’s light, fragrant and pure, with crunchy red cherry, spice and a touch of earth. The palate is silky and bright, finishing dry with fine, savoury tannins that give it shape without weight. It’s playful but serious underneath – the kind of wine that disappears faster than you expect.

95 Points - "This is gamay-licious with heady aromas and juicy flavours. It has enough seriousness to last some distance yet is irresistible now with its plushness, sweetly accented fruit with charred radicchio and woodsy spices. Medium weighted and filled out by plump if grainy tannins – refreshment guaranteed." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

Bass Phillip Gamay offers fresh aromas of red berries and spices on the nose. The palate is long with a clean, lingering finish, followed by notes of wild stone fruit that runs the length of the palate.

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
