Description

The remarkable Bass Phillip Pinot Noirs are the benchmark for Gippsland Pinot Noir.

The phenomenal concentration achieved by Phillip Jones comes from the ground up. Biodynamic farming and extreme attention to detail in the vineyard yielding fruit undeniably of a world class standard.

The Estate Pinot Noir sets the tone for the vintage, coming from the original close-planted estate vineyard. Juicy and sweet-fruited with plenty of spice, and a lick of gentle tannin.

There's great structure and texture here and a long life ahead.

95 points
"An elegant style, almost gentle with every element from fruit and acidity to tannins neatly in place. It’s a complete wine. Red cherry accents, rose petals, charred radicchio and a host of spices for good measure. It continues to unfurl beautifully in the glass. As seamless as it gets thanks to superfine tannins and a powder puff of acidity."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points
"Medium full ruby with a tinge of purple; the aromas are of red fruits, the profile lean and elegant, with bountiful drying tannins, and touches of foresty pinot mystery. The wine is lean and drying on the aftertaste. Nice elegant wine, worth a little cellaring also."

    Succulent

Mid ruby. Aromatic red cherries and some powderiness – smells like Burgundy. Medium bodied, rich red

cherries/raspberries with a glycerolly macerated fruit feel. Good fruit length, acid structure.

Bunches are carefully sorted upon arrival at the winery
on a sorting table then conveyed to a ‘state of the art’
incline destemmer. The whole berries are gently
conveyed directly to open fermenters with an addition
of 40 ppm SO2. A natural ferment starts usually within
4 days but hand plunging commences from the start
until draining/pressing. Usually between 10-14 days
from harvest, the wine is drained, the skins pressed
gently and combined with the free run wine which is
settled for a week or so before racking to barrel using
gravity. Malo lactic occurs naturally in barrel and
once complete the wine gets 60 ppm SO2. Our Estate
Pinot is a selection of the best barrels of our Leongatha
vineyard of which 22% were new this year. All barrels
are lightly toasted and extra tight grain oak. Barrels are
topped and checked regularly. Wine stays in barrel for
14 months, then it simply gravity decanted off lees via a
spigot inserted at the bottom of the barrel to a blending
tank. No fining of any sort, or filtration before bottling
in July 2022. A natural deposit may become present
over time in the bottle.

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
