About The Wine

Dave Mackintosh's Arfion label has a good track record with this popular grape, and his style really captures the freshness of 'Grigio' with the texture of 'Gris'.

Unlike the vast majority of Pinot Grigio on the market, his is very much hand-made from start to finish. It comes from the Coombe vineyard in the warmer Lower Yarra Valley area - a site with a great track record for Pinot Gris.

The fruit was hand-picked in the cool early morning to retain freshness and concentration, with whole bunches, older oak and some lees stirring adding nice texture and interest.

It's zippy and refreshing on the one hand, chewy and thought-provoking on the other. A quality Pinot Grigio from Dave and super value.

About Arfion

New Zealand born Dave "Bro" Mackintosh is the head man at Arfion.

After cutting his teeth at Oyster Bay, Dave settled in Victoria's Yarra Valley and after working with Steve Flamsteed at Giant Steps, began his own brand Arfion: which means 'Our Wine' in Scottish Gaelic.

Dave is all about letting the fruit do the talking, guiding rather than forcing, constantly searching for the simplest way to get young, energetic wines into the bottle for people to enjoy.

His Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are all effortless examples of wines made with a ‘less is more’ mentality. By working with some of the best growers in the Yarra Valley, Dave has put together a gorgeous range of wines that have interest and drinkability in spades.

From The Producer

Yarra Station Vineyard – Yarra Glen - Yarra Valley

Sourced from the Yarra Station vineyard in the Yarra Glen subregion of the lower Yarra Valley. These vines sit on a very steep south facing slope of granite and grey clay soils that have ironstone running throughout.

The soils produce chalky but refined Grigio with a very floral aromatic. When picked early and fresh the juice is perfect for wild barrel fermentation.

Winemaking

Handpicked early in the morning and transported directly to cool rooms.

After a night of chilling we whole bunch pressed the fruit with no pressings cut so that we could maximise the texture and crunchy phenolic inherent in the skins.

A slow natural ferment progressed as the juice warmed up in old 500L oak puncheons.

The ferment peaked at 23 deg C and lasted for a duration of 14 days.

Simple winemaking; maybe some malolactic ferment, a little stirring, no fining or filtration and a small amount of sulphur before bottling.

Blend : Pinot Grigio (100%)

Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2024

    Amazing wine

The Arfion PG sits perfectly in that spot between acidity and fruitiness - i am obsessed with this wine. i am also aware that the stock won't last forever, so selfishly I was a bit reluctant to review it!
