Description

A McLaren Vale producer's range would not be complete without a Shiraz, and Brad Hickey (AKA Brash Higgins) does not disappoint.

Sourced from the organically certified Omensetter Vineyard, this wine broods with black plum, and smoked chorizo, underscored by the vineyard’s signature earthiness and blood orange zest twist. The palate is generous and and deep, with beautifully integrated tannins and a long, intricate finish of dark berries and spice.

Crafted from 21-year-old vines, this Shiraz saw 20 months in a mix of new and old French oak after fermenting with wild yeast and 20% whole bunches, lending it a textural complexity that’s both savoury and refreshing.

The SHZ delivers deep fruit intensity without feeling overpowered. This is our kind of McLaren Vale Shiraz - where old school and new school meet.

94 Points
"Dense dark fruit perfume, also iron-rich from the get-go. Rosemary, lavender, orange peel, five spice, umami, molasses type of sweet-salty aroma... It’s all serious and seriously well made too."
- Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

"McLaren Vale meets northern Rhône – achieved with aplomb, without quite the mid-weighted framework or tenacious freshness. Very good all the same... A stylised wine, trading in regionality as we knew it, for an aspirational zeitgeist and a remoulding of perceptions."
- Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 Points - "Dense dark fruit perfume, also iron-rich from the get-go. Rosemary, lavender, orange peel, five spice, umami, molasses type of sweet-salty aroma. Palate hits all the flavour tones–sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and it all works, all melted together. Bresaola and smoked meats. Finishes on a strong cocoa powder, dark chocolate note. Tannins are fine and build the backbone for the fruit and spice to come forth. This is almost 15% alcohol but the fruit intensity is so deep, you can’t feel it. It’s all serious and seriously well made too." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

94 points - "McLaren Vale meets northern Rhône – achieved with aplomb, without quite the mid-weighted framework or tenacious freshness. Very good all the same. Salumi, violet, white pepper grind, dried nori, blueberry, mace and clove, muddled and ground across a persistent linger defined by gritty, almost pixelated dry tannins. A stylised wine, trading in regionality as we knew it, for an aspirational zeitgeist and a remoulding of perceptions." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

The nose of the Brash SHZ is brooding with black plums, chorizo, blood orange zest, spicy paprika, nutmeg and liquorice. There’s a sweet earthy note that is typical of Omensetter Vineyard’s red clay. The palate is generous, well-balanced and vibrant, the tannins integrated, and the finish long with complex, interweaving berry and spice notes.

Made from 21 year old shiraz vines grown at the Organic Brash Higgins estate Omensetter Vineyard. 2020 in the Vale was a very warm year with very low yields. Low rainfall during Winter set the scene for a tricky year ahead. Our proximity to the Gulf of St Vincent helped moderate the warm days and keep the grapes balanced and healthy. Vinted from hand selected fruit, the 2020 SHZ was comprised of 20% whole bunch fruit, and sent to open one ton fermenters for 3 weeks. Wild yeast did their job and then it all was gently basket pressed and sent to a mix of new and older French hogsheads for 20 months.

Brash Higgins

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking American-turned-honorary-Aussie, Brad Hickey.

In his former life, Hickey was one of America's top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York's finest wine lists. He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.

Hickey's wines are extremely expressive. They fall in two camps - the wines sourced from Omensetter vineyard and those sourced from friends around the Vale and the warm, dry Riverlands.
