Description

Bell Hill’s Chardonnay continues to set the bar for New Zealand’s cool-climate expressions, offering a stunning interplay between power, precision and place. The 2020 release is a meticulous seven-barrel blend from the Shelf, Roadblock, and Limeworks parcels - some of the most treasured sites in the Waipara Valley.

Whole cluster pressed and matured in 32% new French oak for 12 months, the wine was then settled in tank for an additional nine months before bottling in January 2022. As always, the élevage here is about enhancing detail and purity rather than overt oak expression.

The 2020 is tense and mineral-driven, with ripe, intense florals, sea spray, and stone fruits layered over a sweet-fruited core. As it breathes, it gains tension and focus, offering a nervy, saline palate underpinned by lemon meringue and white blossom notes. Textural yet refined, it carries a dry, energetic finish that is both mouthwatering and beautifully persistent.

With only 2,089 bottles and 106 magnums produced, this is a bellwether New Zealand Chardonnay with outstanding ageing potential.

"Dried apple and honey with some straw and lemon curd character. Flint and matchstick. Medium body with phenolics and apple skin texture. Dried apples and peaches at the finish. Salted butter. Some nutty undertones. Yogurt, too. Tangy and rich at the same time. Rich yet energetically driven. Very youthful and exciting. Complex. Better with three or four years of bottle age. Drink or hold."

"A restrained but precise nose which flits from white peach and stone to orchid, soaked in smoky-sweet, spicy oak. The palate is incredibly intense with waves of concentrated lemon and oyster-shell crashing over the spicy oak and hints of salted caramel. Very powerful and driven, most of the flavour currently resides on the back-palate and unfolds on the incredibly long finish. Super-serious with a confounding juxtaposition between immensity and linearity, this is just a baby right now and will only come into its own with careful cellaring. The structure and density here suggests a very long life ahead."

The Bell Hill Chardonnay is a 7-barrel blend of the Shelf, Roadblock, and Limeworks 2009 parcels. All fruit was whole cluster pressed and had 32% new French oak in its elevage of 12 months before racking and blending with a further 9 months in tank and bottling on the 19th of January 2022 with 3.39 pH, 6.3g/L TA and 13.5% alcohol. 2,089 bottles and 106 magnums were produced. A Single Parcel Limeworks Chardonnay of 654 bottles and 96 magnums will be released with the 2021 vintage.

Ripe, intense florals with sea breeze and mineral tones underlying a sweet-fruited nose. Good phenolic presence, in the riper spectrum, gaining tension with air and time, nice, dry-extract finish. The wine is very focused, and will shed its weight, coming to white florals in aroma and flavour, the fruit tones down giving a lemon meringue citrus drive, very salivating with a ripe salinity drive on the palate showing nervosity, energy and length.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
