Description

The 2020 Premium Chardonnay comes from the original Leongatha vineyard – the same close-planted site that’s been at the core of Bass Phillip since 1979. It’s a wine that sits just below the Reserve in the line-up, but in 2020, it delivers a level of depth and balance that feels right up there.

The season was mild but short, with lower yields than usual, and that concentration shows in the glass. The fruit was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and wild-fermented in French oak, a portion new, then left on lees for texture before bottling unfiltered. The approach is classic Bass Phillip: minimal intervention, all about texture and natural acidity.

It’s layered but not heavy – white peach, citrus curd and almond meal, with a touch of struck flint and soft oak rounding it out. The palate walks the line between richness and restraint beautifully, finishing long, savoury and fresh. It’s serious, cellar-worthy Chardonnay but still easy to enjoy now with a bit of air.

98 Points
"A stunning wine with great density and gravitas. A thoroughly impressive chardonnay in a style that looks more towards Burgundy than Australia."

98 Points - "Mid-yellow colour, with a rich, multi-dimensional bouquet that incorporates creamy lees, cashew nut, nougat and peanut brittle, mealy and savoury, the opposite of simple primary fruit, while the palate is concentrated and powerful, driving and very long, with mouth-watering acidity in harmony with all of the wine's other components. A stunning wine with great density and gravitas. A thoroughly impressive chardonnay in a style that looks more towards Burgundy than Australia." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Less than one acre, planted since 1979. This section of the vineyard is more than 40 years old today, it has started to deliver complex nuances and has a very long-flavour, lingers cleanly on your palate. Typically, the wine has a fully integrated, complex blend of stone fruits, nuts and soft oak, riding on top of a balanced acidic backbone. It has very good depth and breadth on the palate, some nuttiness alongside the stone fruit flavours. Builds on the finish, complex and thought-provoking. Meant to age 10 years or more.

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
