Description

This is the benchmark. Vat 1 has long stood as Australia’s most awarded white wine, and for good reason - it’s pure Hunter Semillon, made with restraint, precision, and serious confidence in the vineyard.

The 2019 vintage is already showing its class. There’s bright citrus and lemon peel up front, with the first signs of that classic toasty, nutty development starting to appear. The palate is tight and focused, with a gentle waxy glide and a finish that just keeps going. No oak, no tricks - just low-yielding old vines and time doing what they do best.

Vat 1 is built to age, and it does it better than just about any white in the country. But even now, with a few years under its belt, it’s already offering plenty. A proper Australian icon that’s still made with quiet understatement.

Great wines like Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon are celebrated for their clarity of expression and remarkable intensity – qualities that shine brightly in the '19 vintage. The mid-palate is beautifully open and generous, showcasing powerful citrus flavours and micro hints of flint, wet river stones, lemon curd and greengages. The true strength of this vintage lies in its refreshing, succulent mid-palate, harmonious balance and ultra-cleansing finish, making it a superb accompaniment to food. It is at the beginning of its evolution, and its refinement and grace set it apart.

White peach and citrus, lemon balm perfume, very fine feeling wine with soft chalky texture, almost silky (in context), but nervy and gently grainy on the finish. A subtle herbal thread runs through it, adding complexity. It feels cool and composed and delivers flavour in a quietly confident way. Explosive length marks it out as being a special wine.

Bright, light yellow colour; reserved and delicate lemon and honey aromas, a hint of grassiness, but no toast yet; the palate light bodied and reserved, delicate and refined, with a big lemon-juicy finish that lingers long and harmonious. The fruit purity is impressive. Delicious, pristine semillon of great depth of flavour and harmony. It's starting to drink really well and has many years ahead of it.

Sourced from the oldest and best blocks, dry grown vines dating back to 1923. The 2019 continues the harmonious vintage streak with superb fruit intensity showing zested limes, calamansi pip and wet river stone. Some apple blossoms and fresh linen billowing on the hills hoist. Its time in bottle has allowed the wine to snuggle into itself and drinks with the same magnitude of flavour as the nose promises, scratch that, it actually doubles down in its fruit power. Shouting from the rooftops with lime margaritas, Mirabelle plums and pistachio nougatine. A mealy cashew mid palate and a long echoing, juicy acidity and persistent length. Simply put, it’s everything you hoped it would be and drinking like an Aussie bushland dream. Its purity and complexity is and always is utterly astounding. This is the best money you can spend on an Australian wine icon. Drink now with oysters (obvs) maybe with a white wine mignonette and some sea succulent. Or put your faith in Semillon and lay down for further 10 years, 20 or 30 years plus.

Stunning semillon. Proudly one of Australia's greatest wines. Enjoy one whilst young, then wait to enjoy the others. They transform into honeyed, toasty masterpieces.

There’s no denying that Hunter Valley Semillon is one of Australia’s great iconic wines. And no-one reaches the heights with the variável quite as much as Tyrrell’s. This is superbly fine, beautifully crisp with flavours of lemon and citrus. It reveals its layers slowly through its subtle delicacy. A stunning wine with simple seafoods, it’s magnificent now but if you are patient, it becomes a glorious, honeyed, rich masterpiece.

Vineyard
Vat 1 Semillon is sourced exclusively from the oldest and best blocks. The vines are all dry grown, on their own roots, and date back to 1923.

Vintage Conditions
The 2019 vintage in the Hunter Valley was another high-quality year across all varieties, following the stellar 2018. Continued dry conditions led to slightly lower yields, but fruit quality was excellent, with intense concentration.

Winemaker’s Notes
All fruit was handpicked on 5 and 6 February in perfect condition before being lightly pressed. The free-run juice was fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks, where the wine remained until bottling in early July.

Tasting Notes
The nose shows a lifted floral character with intense citrus, more pronounced than in recent years. The palate has grand cru-like depth and power, balanced by elegance and a softer acid profile. A classic Vat 1, showing exceptional length and balance typical of great vintages.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.
