Description

The Hunter Valley sees a combination of extreme heat and summer rainfall during the growing season, meaning that harvest in this region is consistently earlier than the rest of Australia. Stylistically, this results in a lighter, more delicate Shiraz, which was affectionately called Hunter River Burgundy back in the day.

If you've never tried one, the Old Hut is a great place to start. The vineyard was planted in 2003 using cuttings from Tyrrell's iconic 4 Acres block, giving Old Hut some amazing pedigree. It over-delivers on flavour, with a burst of dusty spice, raspberries, savoury herbs, cocoa and leather, but somehow manages to pack it all into a delicate and elegant wine. It will age beautifully but, damn, it's delicious now.

93 Points - Brooding feel for Hunter shiraz, choc-liquorice and dark cherry, some plummy notes in the mix. Dense in flavour but right no medium weight. Lots of detail here, spice, anise, earthiness, but also a suppleness and smoothness, an even flow. Good gear from any stance.' Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

A vibrant nose of dark fruits and spice. Even though this block is located right beside 4 Acres, the wine has a bigger structure and completely different weight, although it is still only medium bodied. It possesses richer fruits, along with fine tannins and a soft acid structure, and shows no influence of new oak.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.
