Description

Old Hillside was first planted in 1867. These original Shiraz vines still survive and are the oldest in NSW. Realising the potential of the site, the vineyard was expanded in the 1960s using cuttings of these 1867 vines. Old Hillside, as a wine, comes from these 60-year-old 'young vines.'

There is a lot of depth and power here, especially for a Hunter Valley Shiraz. There is a gorgeous lift of lavender and dark plum, but also a deep core of liquorice, blood plum, sour cherries and dried flowers. With some time in the glass a bit of forest floor and leather starts to appear, along with a bit of rich Black Forest cake. It's old school Hunter Valley Shiraz, and the closest thing to a 'big, gutsy red' you'll find from the region.

92 Points - The Old Hillside is the vines around the Old Patch, that are not quite as old. Blackberry, violet, pretty and perfumed, but with a modest earthy bass, slight unripe strawberry acidity, especially on the finish, but flesh around it, and good length with a bit of tomato acidity. Length is good, mind you, many good things...' Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 Points - "The vines on the Old Hillside Vineyard were planted in the 1950s, and the fermentation and maturation of this wine suggest a sensitivity to extracting the vineyard's character and bottling it just so. Matured in large format 2,700-liter French oak casks for 14 months, it was bottled in April 2020. This 2019 Old Hillside Vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz leads with blood plum, cranberry, pomegranate and red licorice backed by a skein of savory tannin that is deftly managed and shaped so as to be at once invisible and supportive. This is a beautiful wine with restraint and elegance in equal measure. Glorious." - Erin Larkin (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

This block features darker, richer soils than those at our Ashmans property. This is a well-balanced, elegant style that shows good balance between vibrant fruit and savoury spice, along with classic Hunter Valley wet earth. The oak is only a minor component and the tannins provide structure and depth on the back palate.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.
