Description

Sourced from a single vineyard at Light Pass, the 2019 Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Semillon is harvested from some of the world's oldest Semillon vines, planted before 1850. Handpicked early in the season to retain high acidity, the fruit is basket pressed and tank fermented without oak, showcasing the vineyard’s unique character.

In the glass, this Semillon shines with a crystalline pale yellow hue and an iridescent green rim. The nose offers bright lemongrass, orange blossom, and a distinctive mineral character, while the palate is filled with sinewy structure and a focused acid line, delivering a textural experience with a perfect balance of sweet and sour.

This exciting Semillon, ideal for immediate enjoyment or cellaring, epitomizes Marco Cirillo’s dedication to quality and tradition, offering a piece of Barossa's history in every bottle.

"There's a wonderful detail to both aroma and flavour... Tightly coiled and febrile on the palate with pure citrus fruits, light almond meal and lanolin tones and plenty of saline and flinty drive, finishing dry with a lemon sherbety swoosh! Great length of flavour and crisp, thirst-slaking enjoyment here."
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "Extremely old vines for the variety, unembellished with oak or excessive ripeness, in an endeavor to avoid a waxy lanolin sensation. That said, this light-weighted wine remains on tank lees for textural nourishment. Lemon drop, talc, quince paste, verbena and fennel, with a skein of juicy acidity dragging wonderful, crunchy length. Drink or hold." - James Suckling

The Cirillo 1850 Semillon is harvested entirely of a single vineyard in the Light Pass region in the Barossa Valley believed to be the oldest Semillon (Madeira) vineyard in the world. It is one of the few remaining Madeira vineyards left in Australia. This is why it is released under the Semillon varietal name, as opposed to the Madeira region.

Picked early in the season, normally in mid‐late January, it is harvested with great acidity. The fruit is handpicked and basket pressed. The wine is then tank fermented, without oak.

It is extremely pale green/yellow, almost clear in colour. The aroma is of lifted lemongrass with some clean mineral characters. Fruit is dominant on the palate with a lean, light structure and driven acid finish.

This Semillon is the ideal balance of fruit and acidity. Truly an exciting Semillon that will reward early drinking or cellaring for years to come.

Cirillo

Marco Cirillo is Barossan to the core. His family lays claim to the world’s oldest continuously producing Grenache vines, the most ancient of them dating back to 1850. This is an incredible achievement from the Cirillos and those vignerons who have tended to these vines for over 160 years.

Marco's range of wines made primarily from Grenache and Shiraz screams quality at every level, with old vine concentration paired with the modern brightness of fruit. Considering the incredible history in every bottle, they provide incredible value for the money also - the Vincent Grenache is one of the best $25ish wines in the country. One of our favourite Barossa producers.
