Description

One of Australia’s true trailblazers, Nine Popes helped set the bar for modern GSM blends long before the rest of the country caught up. First made in the late ‘80s, it’s still built from old-vine Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro grown in Melton’s patchwork of Barossa and Eden Valley vineyards, with a style that confidently walks the line between Rhône-inspired elegance and Barossa richness.

The 2019 vintage leans into its Grenache core, giving the wine perfume and energy, with Shiraz adding depth and Mataro bringing structure and spice. There’s a generous lick of new French oak (about 50%), but it’s handled with a light touch - it frames rather than dominates. Plush and full-flavoured, yet lifted and composed, this is serious but not stiff, and built to go the distance if you’ve got the patience.

For those chasing a more classic, ageable side of Barossa, this remains one of the best examples going.

"Wonderfully fragrant red and dark plum fruits with high tones of raspberry coulis and orange blossom. Under the fruit lies layered spice and hints of red licorice, redcurrant jelly, roasting meats and earth. The fruit on the palate is pure and true, the tannins tight, powdery and fine and there is a lovely cadence to the acidity as it propels the wine forward. It's still, and always has been, a joy to drink."

97 points - "Charlie Melton's Nine Popes was one of the first wines that make me fall in love with Barossa wines, and it still makes me go all gooey-eyed. It's old-vine grenache and shiraz aged for 27 months in French oak (50% new). Wonderfully fragrant red and dark plum fruits with high tones of raspberry coulis and orange blossom. Lovely deep colour. Nice bright crimson edge to the colour. Opens on nose with a delightful spicy licorice all sorts amalgam of sweet perfume and spice, although 50% new oak was used, it remains in the background as a support to the exotic aromatics. Licorice and meat stock flavours lead into a plush rounded structure, with an excellent volume of finely wrought tannins to help shepherd this wine many years into the future.
