2017 Clos Mogador Priorat

Priorat, Spain

Another tremendous vintage release of one of Spain's most prestigious wines - a Grenache-based powerhouse.

About the Wine

Mogador the Bold - the 2016 release of this famous Spanish red is a more refined this days but it is nonetheless a rich, brash wine. The indigenous local grapes Grenache and Carignan do most of the heavy lifting, with Shiraz and Cab Sauvignon in supporting roles.

Lively red and black fruits, some licorice/ aniseed, and cinnamon spice- this is a brooding, old man of a wine, with a youthful soul.

Spends 18 months in both small and large casks - the oak treatment has been toned down for recent vintages. Clos Mogador now carries the new 'Vi de Finca Qualificada' for great single vineyard wines, the first producer in Spain to receive this qualification.

About Clos Mogador

Clos Mogador is the brainchild and life's work of one man and his family. Rene Barbier was born in nearbyTarragona in 1950, and is a direct descendent of a French line of winemakers whose origins can be traced back to the 1200s. Just as his ancestors had done before him, he has spent his life working in the wine world.

His scope in the wine world and experience stretches from the vineyards to wine marketing and most importantly covers the part where his own wines are made. In 1979, he acquired his first vineyard in Priorat and started to make his first wine in the area: Clos Mogador. A little later on came Nelin, Manyetes and Espectacle del Montsant.

Rene, along with other wine pioneers, was responsible for the emergence of Priorat and surrounds onto the global wine world.

From the Producer

In the 19th century, the Barbier family owned some 1,500 hectares (3,707 acres) of vines in an estate called Le Martinet. This estate extended into three appellations: Plan de Dieu, Rasteau and Gigondas. Léon Barbier, our great-grandfather, pioneered the bottling of his first wine. In 1880, phylloxera ravaged the vineyards in France so he was obliged to source the much needed grapes from Spain. This was the origin of the negotiations for the winery founded in Tarragona (Catalonia), which was registered under his son’s name, René Barbier. In the 1940s, Leon II and René II took the initiative of bottling the first wines from the Priorat as well as other quality wines from Catalonia.

Leaving that difficult period in the past, we now turn to a new and exciting venture created by the present generation! In 1979, René III (son of René II), his wife Isabelle Meyer and their children René IV, Céline and later on Christian and Andersen, acquired a few hectares of Grenache near to Gratallops in the DO Priorat. This was the birth of Clos Mogador. Some years later, in 2000, a dream held close to their hearts came true – the creation of a white wine called Nelin. Round about the same time, enticed by an old property of Cariñena vines, the Manyetes label was created.

I also tasted the 2017 Clos Mogador next to the 2018 vintage. The varietal mix has been slowly changing, with less Cabernet and Syrah and more and more Cariñena. 2017 was a tough vintage, a very warm and extremely dry year, and the character of the wine is almost opposite from 2018. The wine had a very slow fermentation, as they used larger volumes for the fermentation, and the challenge was to keep the freshness. The wine has a full 1% more alcohol than the 2018, but there is very good acidity that keeps the wine balanced. It has dusty tannins and very ripe flavors, with a long finish—warm and Mediterranean, a little in the style of the 2011." The Wine Advocate
